Does this sleep clinics map work for you?

Post by Bogof » Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:35 am

Hi,

I'm making a website about OSA primarily for the UK and it has a sleep clinics finder map on it which tries to be clever with your ip link to find your nearest sleep clinics. Me and my friend added most clinics for the UK and the USA.

Can you please check for me if the map guesses your location fairly accurately? Thanks a lot!

Oh and if you have any more feedback on the wee page, that would be great. It's not finished by any means but it's a start at least. Like about the design, what other information you might want to see that you find hard to find on other websites or via your doctor. Remember it's focussed for the UK though, there are many quality OSA sites for the US already!

Thanks sooo much, sleep tight!

I checked out your site, its quite nice, but the accuracy of the map was off by 1000 miles or more. I am in the middle of Wisconsin, and it had a map of Washington DC. Once I put my zip code (postal code) in, it brought up Wisconsin and their sleep clinics. I have added your site to my favorites to check out again. Thanks.

Thanks a lot Scott!

It does the ip thingy with a database which is 95% accurate they say. After I get a new mask I may have some money left for the more expensive database It is likely to have problems when you are with aol I don't know why. At least indeed it can then be updated with whatever location you want.

Cheers for looking!

PS all this website stuff is giving me sleepless nights again ha!

It guessed mine correctly.

HOWEVER what database are you using to flag the sleep centers? It did not flag my sleep center (which is AASM accredited) on the map, only the other two centers here in town. If I looked at that, I'd think the nearest center was clear across the city instead of less than a mile from my house.

very interesting. I am in the US. The map detected me in a town about 30 miles away from where I live and directed me to a sleep clinic in the next state. There are two sleep clinics much closer to me, one directly in my town. I think once the bugs are worked out it could be a great tool.

Thanks Tilly and Heather!

We had to collect the clinics manually from online sources such as yellow pages, their websites via Google, Yahoo local etc. so we may well have missed the odd one! If you could name them, I'll try and add then if I can find info on them. I'm guessing we miss at least a dozen or so but I have no way of knowing really

So if you know of any and know their name and city, we should be able to fill in the rest with our friend Google.

At least it looks it gets the location fairly accurately!

Thanks alot!

It showed me as in Irving TX when I am in Knoxville, TN, about 900 miles away.

When I put in my zip code it doesn't list my sleep clinic, which is Barker Sleep Institute. I'm sorry I don't have their street address though... they are very new.

Cool tool though!

Dawn

Thanks Dawn!

They're definitely new, both Google and Yahoo only list 1 result (which mentions 'coming soon'!

I found a logo Image, that's it!

Will take note and check them out later.

Good map

Post by geoDoug » Mon Jun 25, 2007 1:51 pm

It came up with a state across the nation (North Carolina. I'm in California.) but that very well may be because of my being behind a firewall, having a dynamic IP, and a large provider. Once I put in my ZIP code, it worked perfectly. And I learned how many sleep clinics there are in my area. Cool tool. A suggestion: for the sake of usability, you may want to add something under the map to make it clear that somebody can enter their ZIP code. That way, somebody won't go to it, then just say, "this is worthless" when it doesn't give the desire results.

Doug.

Good idea Doug, and judging by your handle, you seem to know a thing or two about mapping.

I will change the instructions based on the visitor's country.

I have some experience with web site usability. So I tend to look at sites through that lens.

FWIW, I will change the instructions based on the visitor's country.
The handle has nothing to do with geography. It's pronounced "gooey" and is a result of being an Evergreen State College alumnus. (Home of the geoducks.)

Maybe I should change my handle to the phonetic pronunciation...

Doug.

I live in a tiny village south of London Ontario Canada and it showed my IP address as London Ont. which is correct. The map showed me the closest U.S. sleep clinics. If you would be interested in adding Canadian sleep clinics to your map, here is a good source, with thanks to James Skinner.

Very cool, I've never seen a map like that before. It had me correct to within about 30 miles. I did notice that a sleep clinic near me was missing. It is at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT. Great site! Thanks!

Well, my IP address lied to your software or .... Chicago, IL was designated but I'm a 5-6 hour drive from Chicago, IL over in mid-Michigan.

My zip code brought up several sleep clinics, but none of the closest ones. Those brought up were two in the Flint, Michigan area, one in Owosso, Michigan and one in Bay City, Michigan.

Anyway: Saginaw, Michigan has the following sleep clinics that I know of:

Covenant HealthCare Sleep Disorders Center
515 N Michigan
Saginaw, Michigan 48602
(989) 583-2930
(This sleep center is accredited)

Sleep Associates
4215 Fashion Square Blvd, Ste 2
Saginaw, MI 48605
(979) 792-9253
(at least one of the doctors is accredited, I "think" that 2 are)

Sleep Diagnostics of Michigan
4707 McLeod Drive
Saginaw, Michigan 48604
(989) 793-1211

St Mary's Sleep Disorder Center
Saginaw, Michigan
(989) 497-3176
(I'm not sure which campus the sleep clinic is located at)

Great idea Bogof!

Another Canadian here. Your map correctly listed my city as Oakville, Ontario, and directed me to the closest US location.

It would be great if you could expand the database to include Canadian sleep clinics.
