Leak fixes?

Post by MRH » Fri Jun 22, 2007 4:56 pm

It seems that the usual reply on leaks here is "Are you mouth breathing?" I have a full face mask now so that eliminates that, and I am still seeing around a 40 plus or minus leak rate with the Comfortfull2 mask at 11 cm H20. Tried the Lanisoh cream, and that didn't seem to help. So what other tricks are there? I think I have it adjusted decent, but wake up and have to move the mask around at times. Or do I just have to try some different masks until I get the perfect fit?

Thanks,
Mark

Probably. What does your RT say about your leaks?

Good luck!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

There is a product called mask seal that is sold by West Marine. I have used it and you just need a little bit for it to work. It comes in a tube like chapstick and is used to seal dive masks. I put just a thin layer on my mask and it worked great. The sticky came off with just a little soap and water. The only other choice would be to try a new mask.

I am wondering if anyone has posted/is willing to post a systematic, mask independent approach to reducing leaks.

Something written by some-one who has been around for a while and knows a general strategies that work for reducing leaks?

Clearly an important and early first step for non full-face mask users is to test for mouth-breathing.

I had to leak a lot on my Swift until one day one of our wise ones suggested I tape my mouth. I had read the suggestions and , of course, ignored them, because I knew my mouth stayed firmly shut.

But when she told me too, I did, and suprise, my leak rate when down.

So wise ones out there. How about an"Idiots Guide to Leak Reduction" please.

sounds about right to me for that mask/pressure. You will have 32-38L/m intentional leak on that mask and I've yet to see anyone maintain a zero leak rate with a full face mask.

mouth breathing/leaking is pretty common you usually find that out taping your mouth where you see leak rates drop dramatically.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

i use pretty much the same system as you dsm. If I do not wash at least the cushion on my mask daily and my face right before bed I get leaks. If I forget to wash my mask in the morning then I will just pop the cushion off at night then wash it shake it a bit then wipe with clean towel...then I will turn my cpap on to mask fit mode (so it doesnt mess with my stats) and blow the cushion for about 30 seconds to make sure it is fully dry. Then I put it back on the mask.
I use the UMFF. I like it, but at my pressure of 14 (not as high as soom) it lifts off my fact....so I have to keep it pretty tight. I dont tend to get the eye leaks some complain of, I tend to leak on the sides of the chin.

Definatly wash your mask or at least cushion every day and your face before bed. Dont know how or why but it just seems to work.
