Sore from sleeping in one position all night?

Post by doni49 » Sat May 19, 2007 8:10 pm

I've ALWAYS tossed and turned all night. But now that I'm using this CPAP machine, I've found that I HAVE to stay on my back. Because when I roll to the side, the mask leaks like crazy. If I try rolling onto the front, the mask pushes into my face and hurts.

On the occasions that I've slept all night with the mask on, I've awakened with a very stiff back and neck (normally don't when I can roll over freely). I was however less tired than I normally am while not using CPAP--so that's good.

The other thing is that have the time, I push the mask off in my sleep. I THINK part of it has to do with the fact that my chin strap slides down.

Yes, sleeping in one position all night can make you stiff. As you get more used to the mask and hose you will sleep more comfortably, I think. If your mask leaks when you move, you need to try an adjust it better or maybe try another mask. I fyou do a search for your mask you should be able to find tricks to make it work better for you.
Taking the mask off in the early days of treatment is normal. If you wake up with it off during the night, just put it right back on.

I first got this machine last July or August. The first mask that I had CONSTANTLY leaked no matter what I did.

I was provided with a new mask and the first week with it everything was fine. Then after I cleaned everything the next weekend, it would leak. I've never had too much success since then and my DME says that I DID put it all back together properly.

After a few months of waking up in the morning and finding that I'd pushed the mask off, I gave up. Just recently, I decided to try it again.

As to the mask leaking when I move, it seems to mainly be the mask hitting my pillow as opposed to being a bad seal. Because I can roll to my side but as soon as the pillow comes in catact w/the mask, it starts leaking.

And since the chin strap won't stay where it's supposed to, I think I'm losing pressure out my mouth.

The really odd part of the mask being removed is that on a few occasions it wasn't just shoved off and laying in the bed next to me. The chin strap and mask were laying neatly on the table next to the machine. I live alone so that's not it.

After cleaning the mask try soaking it in a solution of 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water for about 15 mins then rinse well. Soap residue could be messing up the seal and the vinegar will fix that. Don't use a soap with lotion in it, I use Dawn dishwashing liquid, it cuts the oils and rinses off well.
If you were removing the mask in your sleep for month something about the mask was probably bothering you, like the leaks. I use the Papillow when I sleep. It's shaped so the mask sort of hangs over the edge of the pillow, so it doesn't knock the mask off. You may need to try another mask.
Most find that chin straps don't work well for them. Have you tried taping your mouth shut?

I sleep on my back all night because of lower back issues and because I have aerophagia issues when side-lying.

I've discovered that when I wake during the night (about 3 am), changing pillows aligns things just differently enough that my muscles are content for a few more hours.

Is there any kind you'd recomend? I've never paid too much attention to the differences in vinegar smell and I'd like one that wouldn't bring with it an obnoxious smell. I'm guessing distilled white vinegar.

I've been using a basic dish soap with no lotions.

Do you (or anyone else) know of a mask that would be good for all positions? B4 CPAP, I literally NEVER knew how I'd wake up. Sometimes on my stomach, sometimes on my back, sometimes on my side.

No I haven't. I'm hoping I can find another solution. Maybe a diff strap. I really don't like the idea of taping my mouth shut.

I sleep in all positions. I've used the CL2, Hybrid, Aclaim2 and optilife, all with no problem. I can sleep in any position with any of these. As for the vinegar, yes, distilled white vinegar is what I use. Just be sure to rinse well. I also make sure I do this in the a.m. so any vinegar odor has time to dissipate before bed
