New CPAP User.. Wish me Luck

Post by Dark_Star » Sat May 05, 2007 4:33 pm

hey all,

I just took delivery of my new CPAP system and tonight is my first night.

Respironics M Series with C-Flex and a Comfort gel mask.

I tested the system today.. by just laying in bed for a little while with it all running.

My concern is.. I felt like I was over breathing.. meaning I was like hyper -ventilating.

Is this normal??

I am looking forward to the possibility of getting a good night sleep.

Welcome!

You might have that sensation for a while. I know my first instinct was to fight it and try to breathe all the way out. Try just relaxing and breathing out only to the point when you're not fighting to exhale. Then you probably won't hyperventilate.

Try playing with C-Flex settings too, since that can make it feel very different and much more comfortable when you find the right one.

Thanks for the reply..

I actually went into the settings and disabled the C-Flex. The sleep center told me I may not need it with a 10cm .. I figured I can always enable it later..... But maybe it would help after all.

The Ramp up is easier on me.. but when I switch to 10 it got tougher.

I am sure I am over analyzing and later on when i am tired it will work out a-ok.

I did well at the sleep center ...

This Comfort Gel mask seems very comfortable.. I am using the small size and do not hear or feel any leaks. (I was worried since I bought it online without trying first)

We'll see........

Dark Star,

Like the name BTW. Congrats on getting your equipment and being so excited to try it on. I would suggest using the c-flex if after ramping up to 10 it becomes uncomfortable. After you get used to it though unbelievably you might not even notice it's on or have to check that it's actually working! I've done that many times. Then there are also the times when I've tried to rip the mask off in the middle of the night. But I think that was because I had the straps WAAAAY too tight!

I have left it at the c-flex setting of 2 since I got the machine and haven't used the ramp since the first night or two.

Good sleeping tonite!!

With your positive attitude and go get 'em spirit you should do well ... keep it up!

Well.. last night did not go so good.

Went to bed at 10:00 pm as usual... 2 hours later I was still wide awake. Guess i was over anxious. So I disconnected at Midnight... then feel right to sleep.

Woke in middle of night and tried again..
but I could not fall asleep with it on.

My problem .. is the air seems sooo much to try and breath. Maybe I should slow it down. (I am at 10cm).

Like I said before.. I can tolerate the ramping. Which I believe it set to 20 minutes. (Maybe I should set ramp longer?)

Anyways... I appreciate this forum. I am just venting here and hope that this is just a case of being too anxious!

Welcome Dark Star!

You will find so many cpap'ers to help you here!

I ramped at 45 minutes prior to getting my apap. Made a huge difference for me.

Good luck!

Welcome, Dark Star!

Sorry your first night didn't go so well. This therapy is as much mental as it is physical. While I didn't have much trouble breathing out at 10 cm, I know that others have. There's all kinds of things you can do to get your mind and body used to the setup, like wearing it (with the machine on) during the day for a few hours, or using ramp, C-Flex, etc. Personally, I didn't like using the ramp because I found myself "waiting" for the pressure increases. I don't really like the lower flow anyway because I don't feel like it gives me enough air! I like to imagine that I'm on the beach with a cool breeze blowing in my face.

Anyway, maybe it'll help to know that 10 cm of pressure is about equivalent to the force required to drink from a straw. Not so much, really.

I hope tonight goes better for you. We're here to help and answer any questions you have.

Take Care,
Cathy

Sorry, that was me, above. I had put my computer security "cookie" settings on the most secure setting, and this website logged me out every time I changed screens. Live and learn...

Thanks for the input ...

Frankly, I think I was "thinking" too much last night ... also with all the "new" noises, sounds and the strange mask ... I was most likely a little freaked out.

It's funny, during the day I had no trouble "testing" the system and I thought it would be smoother at bedtime.

Lastly.. is there any over the counter sleep aid that anyone can recommend (other than a glass of whiskey )

Ok.. it's a sunny Sunday and I am going to get out and do some yard work.

Dark_Star,

I am not a health care provider of any sort. I just wanted to mention that you will see a lot of discussion on this forum about melatonin. You can use the forum search feature to read more about it. Snoredog posted this interesting link on melatonin from the University of Maryland Medical Center. Be sure to scroll down in the article to read Precautions and Possible Interactions.

http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/melatonin-000315.htm

There are pros and cons regarding melatonin. I'm not making a recommendation, but rather suggesting you might want to research it and maybe talk with your doctor about it.

Good luck.

Janna

Dark_Star, I don't like ramp myself and don't use it. But if it helps you, that's good.

When you wake up in the middle of the night feeling like too much air is blowing at you, you can reach over, fumble a bit, and hit the ramp button to make the pressure drop down and the ramp start over again.

Welcome to the message board, and good luck with your treatment! You have a good sense of humor, so you'll do fine. That's a big help with this kind of wacky treatment.

Dark_Star....I just wanted to say welcome and tell you to hang in there. It does get easier. The first four nights I pulled my mask off and threw it on the floor. On the fifth night, though, it stayed on. After the first week, I turned off the Ramp because I had learned to 'just breath ' and not be concerned about what the machine was doing.

Just don't give up. It is worth it.

I would honestly say you should turn C-Flex on and see what happens. When I'm on APAP I can't tolerate my pressures at all without it.

I appreciate the replies!

It is nice to have the support from folks that have "been there and done that ".

My wife is trying to be supportive and "knows" I will get through these first days...

I set myself up in the guest room so I would not bother her while I am fidgeting with this start up phase.

But I am sure she would and will be pleased to hear the quiet subtle machine noise instead of my loud snoring
