Encore Pro v18 - Smart Card Reader Mako vs. ActivCard?
Encore Pro v18 - Smart Card Reader Mako vs. ActivCard?
Does anyone know how to get Encore Pro to recognize anything other then the MakoUSB Card Reader? I have an ActivCard Reader for work security access, running on Vista RTM, and can't install a separate reader w/o causing system problems.
thanks,
David

PCMCIA reader didn't work either
Agreed.Blarg wrote: It won't even work if you install the default driver for the DT-3500
I bought a PCMCIA Smart Card reader for my laptop, changed the system setting preference in Encore, installed the Mako PCMCIA driver and couldn't read my smart card.

Maybe the DT-3500, answers to a Higher Standard. Drivers are just a program, that tells a device how to play with another program. Encore Pro is a program that is only designed to play with a DT-3500, with special drivers. JimSnorkel wrote:Buggers... what ever happened to standards and more devices just work?

You won't find many Chevy water pumps that bolt onto Ford engines either.

I've got a problem with the Mako Infineer DT 3500 card reader also. I loaded the Encore Pro software yesterday, installed the card driver from the Encore CD and everything worked fine. (It's a USB model.) I did notice that the way the card went into the reader was a little flaky. If I move the card around at all, the red light goes on and off. Today all I get is "card reader not detected." I have reloaded the driver, checked in the device manager, "device is working properly" and tried everything I can think of. No luck.
Anyone got any ideas? I think the card reader is defective.

usb port
make sure you are putting it into the
exact usb port you first loaded the drivers
and reader into
also that it is going into the computer ... not keyboard
ect
it has to be the same port and the main computer
to work

As far as the card going into the reader, I think that most people have encountered a few times when it doesn't recognize the card (re-insertion usually works). Also, on two of my computers, I frequently have to unplug the reader from the back of the computer and re-plug it in until the light comes on. In this case, I think the problem may be in the USB ports on the computers. They're identical computers and I have two different cardreaders attached to them.....kind of narrows it down. Sometimes if I wiggle the plug around as I plug it in, the thing will connect sooner.hhopper wrote:

By the way, the card reader needs to be plugged into a port on the back of the computer where it has "power."

Thanks guys,
I tried plugging the USB connector into another port and was prompted to load the driver again. I did and things worked ok. It never would have occurred to me to do that. I wonder if it will want me to load the drivers every time I use it?? Oh well, as long as it works.
Thanks again for the advice... I had tried everything I could think of with no luck.

If you unplug the reader from the computer, make sure you plug it back into the same USB port that you had it plugged into when you installed it.hhopper wrote:

That's another one of its quirks.
Edit: I see wolftracker already mentioned that..... Nothing like being redundant.

Well, last night I didn't even unplug the reader when I shut my computer down. This morning I get the same "card reader not detected" from the Encore Pro software.
I tried unplugging and replugging the reader into the same slot. I tried plugging the reader into the slot I first used. I looked in the device manager and it says the reader is working properly. However the software still will not detect the reader. This is frustrating.
Any ideas?

Have you inserted the card?........ (sometimes one has to ask the obvious)hhopper wrote:

Is it plugged into a USB port in the back of the computer?
If the card is inserted, does the light come on? (red/green)
Were you unplugging and re-plugging it into the computer WITH the card inserted?

Yep.

Yep.

Yep. Tried it with and without. I even tried the driver from the Mako Technologies site. System said it was the same driver. I deleted the driver and reloaded it, then the reader worked fine. I guess I'll just have to reload the driver every time I want to use it. I have an e-mail in to Mako Technologies Support. Maybe they will know. I guess I should e-mail Respironics also...it might be a bug in Encore Pro v. 1.8.49.

If the light comes on with the card in the reader, it should be good to go.
I just always leave mine plugged into my computer (unless I'm trying to deal with its little quirks).

hhopper,
Although I don't have any idea what your specific problem is, I can offer one tip which might help you determine whether your problem is with the card, the driver or with Encore Pro. When the driver and card are working properly, I always see the LED change exactly once from red to green as the card is inserted. When I've seen the LED flicker back and forth more than once, even if it ends up green, then Encore Pro will not recognize the card until I reinsert the card and get the single Red-to-green sequence.
I spent a great deal of time recently attempting to get my Card Reader working properly through Linux and onto several different instantiations of Windows, so this sequence became very familiar, except when something went wrong - then it provided important clues about where the problem was.
Getting the correct sequence meant that the driver and card reader were communicating properly. (I.e., both the Linux and Windows operating systems were channeling the USB signals properly, as well as the driver being installed properly.) Once that LED sequence occurred, then any other problem resided with the Encore Pro setup.
Hope this helps. How does LED color change for you when starting up?
Regards,
Bill
