NeilMed Sinus Rinse
NeilMed Sinus Rinse
I heard about NeilMed Sinus Rinse in the thread where we were discussing Sharon's septoplasty. I was supposed to have a septoplasty next week but have been bumped to August.
Someone mentioned this stuff and it sounded good so I went to get some to try it and get used to it before my septoplasty (yeah, long time in advance ).
This is awesome!! About a year ago, I had to switch to a FF mask because my nasal congestion made it impossible for me to continue with a nasal mask. I've been using this stuff since the weekend and last night I used my old nasal mask. It felt so good and I slept so well finally!!!!!
I guess I'll be able to change my profile back to my beloved HC406 from the UMFF Yippee!!!

I agree - NeilMed's the best. I tried all different kinds of stuff after my sinus surgery and NeilMed was by far the most efficient device. Everything else relied on gravity or there wasn't enough volume, or if I used canned saline it was too expensive as well as too strong a spray.
I can't say enough about NeilMed -- too bad it and the surgery and nasal steroids haven't taken away my constant congestion. The good thing is that I no longer get chronic sinus infections (knock on wood)...

Linda,
Yes, I tried a bunch of stuff in the past but nothing made any difference. This stuff really works.
Snoredog,
Yes, it is but I'm far too lazy to have to make up my own batch so I like the little premixed packages and the bottle with a line at 8 oz. I really did consider trying your way but this came along and it feels easier. Thanks.

I don't do the rhino rinse every night unless allergens get real high or it is windy outside, so I may go several weeks without needing it.frapilu wrote:Linda,

Try that Neilmed spray in the aerosol spray can, I use the Simply Saline brand (same contents) and it has that special applicator which gets the spray way up deep in the sinuses.

I use this one for travel and give myself a squirt right before bed in each nare, put on a BreatheRight strip and it really helps.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
snoredog,
Oooh, Breathe-right strips. Hate those things. I guess I have sensitive skin. I tried using those years ago. First day was not too bad. Second day had marks on my skin where I tore off the strip. Third day I was completely ripping off skin. I don't know how anyone can tolerate them but it's probably just my skin.

Snoredog,
Yes, I too got the "gallon-size" recipe from my ENT and tried using the suction bulb, but it didn't get enough in and it's too much of a pain to deal with (guess I'm lazy too ) The nice thing about the NeilMed device is that it's a "bottom feeder" so you can get all/most of the contents out with your head upright. That's what I like most about it.
I did do the gallon-o-saline once but when I finished it I went to NeilMed. Like France said - I'm a convenience-driven person. I used the Simply Saline right after surgery when you have to be very gentle on the sinuses, but there isn't enough volume there to completely rinse the sinuses and my ENT wanted me to do volume flushing with a bulb/saline solution.
BTW, he was very impressed with the condition of my sinuses at my last checkup (back when I was flushing 3x/day). Now I only flush once a day, sometimes less when I forget to do it until too close to bedtime. The post-nasal drip is too bad then.

you are probably sensitive to the adhesive. They have clear ones now with different adhesive, don't know if you have tried those or not. If I get any pressure on the "outside" of my nose it can cause me nasal congestion, so that is why I use them. I have to usually go with a larger mask for that reason.frapilu wrote:snoredog,

I like those aerosol spray cans version of those sprays, since they are sealed they have no other preservatives like the non-aerosol. SimplySaline gives you a metered blast so a can lasts me several months if I use it every night.
The aerosol cans are also great if you travel, if you get there and find you are all congested a spray or two really helps. When I travel, I mainly just use the aussie heated hose and no humidifier, so it works great for a little added moisture.

I did buy a can of Simply Saline but didn't get around to using it before I tried the NeilMed. I'll make sure I give it a try before my NeilMed runs out. If there was an even easier way than having to mix up the NeilMed -- pull out a can -- I'd be sure to use it Like Linda said, I'm definitely convience-driven (I like that term ).
I had assumed that the Simply Saline would be like HydraSense I had tried before. I got 5 days use out of one bottle so it was getting awfully expensive. The Simply Saline can just didn't look like it would last very long but if you're saying it does, sounds good!

Neti Pot
I was discussing nasal congestion and nasal rinse offline and was told there was a thread about it - so here I am.
Strange enough, I watched an Oprah episode with Dr. Oz on it yesterday in which they covered the Neti Pot!
You can view it here:
http://www2.oprah.com/health/oz/oz_2007 ... _106.jhtml
Is there a reason I'd want to stick with a store product vs making my own solution? I have adverse reactions to many preservatives and am concerned the store product would have preservatives or other ingredient I would have a reaction to - don't need more swelling : )
Has anyone had a similiar response to nasal rinse products due to preservatives or other ingredients?

Breathe-right strips.
My skin had the same reaction - nasty. I lost a few more freckles in the process.frapilu wrote:snoredog,

Hi Gasp,
I haven't had problems with preservatives but definitely with those Breath-strip things. Snoredog did mention that they have new ones but I had such problems with the old ones that I don't dare try them. In any case, it's still going really well with the NeilMed stuff. This weekend I might try the canned Simply Saline I already bought.
Hope you find something that helps.

The ones for sensitive skin are nothing like the tan ones. They are clear and have a different adhesive. They work as good and don't tear your skin up like the tans ones do. I used them every night for years before I had my nose fixed and I have sensitive skin.frapilu wrote:Hi Gasp,

I saw this when I was out shopping a couple years ago:

Nasline Instructions
..and quickly decided it wasn't worth nearly $20.
Especially not when I already had plenty of 60cc/2oz cath tip syringes and old nasal pillows from my Breeze mask I no longer used. I did put a piece of silicone tubing over the end of the syringe tip before putting the Breeze pillow on it, to make it softer, but it probably wasn't necessary. You can purchase 60cc syringes for $1.25-1.50 each, $2.00 at the most, from either your pharmacy or DME or even some pet supply places.
It nice to be able to take it apart to clean and to let it throughly dry between uses...plus at around a$1.50 each, you can afford to replace the syringe every so often (I always wonder about cleaning those blue squeeze bulbs). I recycled a Breeze nasal pillow, but just about any nasal pillow mask could be recycled for this purpose...not like any of us have any extra mask/mask parts laying around
I moved my recycled Breeze nasal pillow over to my WaterPick, along with a minor modification of the tip that came with it...much cheaper then even buying a Grossman adapter.
