Do we only dream in REM?
Do we only dream in REM?
Some comments in another thread prompted this question, but I didn't want to hijack that thread.
Is REM the only time we dream? How long do you normally sleep before hitting REM? (I read somewhere that sleep cycles don't necessarily follow a specific pattern all night long.)

got this info from another url:
Dreams has always been a fascinating topic. The vivid dreams people remember and talk about are REM dreams. These types of dreams occur almost continuously during each REM period. People also dream while they are in NREM sleep. These dreams are typically less frequent and not easily remembered like REM dreams. When we dream in REM sleep our dreams are like a story and are more visual, vivid, and emotional than NREM.

That "ain't" the way I was told. NREM dreams do occur, usually in stage 1 when we are dozing in and out of sleep. We have more control over these dreams and they generally pertain to something we wish we could do, had done, plan on doing, about something due to occur or that recently occurred, etc. REM dreams tend to be the outrageous ones.

Women are Angels. And when someone breaks our wings, we simply continue to fly.....on a broomstick. We are flexible like that.

Slinky, that kinda goes along with my experiences, (unless REM occures within 15 minutes after falling asleep.) When I don't use my CPAP (er, before I had it, I mean), I would go to sleep and wake up within a half an hour having had a very memorable dream. Now, I wake up after about two hours or so from having very vivid dreams. Some people say they like those vivid dreams, but I don't because mine are usually sad or scary and seem so real that I wake up with all the emotions still there from the dream. This doesn't happen when I have the dreams when just falling asleep.

Here's a link I found by doing a Google search on "REM sleep and dreams":
http://academic.pg.cc.md.us/~mhspear/sl ... /index.htm
There were many, many more links and I didn't have time to read them. Just picked this one and found it interesting.
Even the "experts" still know very little.
Sweet dreams......

Thanks, Wulfman. The information I posted was told to me by a sleep neurologist 10 years ago (actually 11 years next month).
