How old are you?
Alright, here goes. I'm probably the grand daddy of the forum, I'm 69 years old, 6ft 4'' 240 and snored all my life, didn't seem to bother me just others that were in range. I have been taken meds for hypertension for the last 30 years, and never was sick, other than colds, and other minor ailments.
Last year in June I felt tired and just felt a lack of energy, my wife talked me into seeing our Dr, who gave me an EKG, said I want you to see a cardiologist, I asked who and when, she said now, I will have him meet you at the hospital, While there I found out my heart was out of rhythm, and that with meds if it didn't return to normal, I would need cardio version, which I did have to get. While under sedation the cardiologist noticed my sleep pattern, and told my wife and daughter he thought I had sleep apnea and should go for a sleep study, rest is history I Did show high amounts of apneas, oxygen levels low, and was told later by cardiologist, apnea could have caused my heart to be out of rhythm, since then I have been 100 percent compliant, cause I'm fearfull of having a setback. I now have to lose some weight start a excersice program, and stay strong. I feel very blessed, great family, 4 great grandkids, a wonderful wife, and Lord willing I'd like to hang aroud another 20 years or so, make that a lot of so's.

Just within the last two months have I develped high blood pressure (along with my PVCs). My blood pressure is running 155/85 usually. I guess that's not dangerously high, but it's high for me.
Those of you with high blood pressure -- are you having to take medicines?
I started having high blood pressure spikes about 10 years ago and have been on a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide otherwise known as HCTZ) since. Around the time I started cpap, my blood pressure settled eown so that now it's usually around 118/65. But I'm still on diuretics so who knows if it would be higher if I wasn't taking them. My doctor doesn't want me to stop them. By the way, what are "PVCs"? I'm probably going to feel stupid when you tell me but right now, I just can't figure it out

I'm 43 and fairly new to CPAP. Since I was a kid, people have been telling me I don't breath when I sleep. So, I'm hoping I caught this in time. So far, morning headaches (that can last all day) have been the only ill health effect that have plagued me. Now if I could just get my AHI below 5....can't seem to get below 7 with CPAP.
Two suggestionsto help get under AHI 5, Make sure you don't mouthbreath, and get the software and reader so you can see what's going on. JimTLD wrote:I'm 43 and fairly new to CPAP. I am 41 and was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know I snored or had apnea until I stayed with my mom, and then a couple of friends in the same room. My DH is a deep sleeper and he has never heard anything. My mother heard a thing on apnea and wanted me to get tested, due to daytime sleepiness, headaches, depression and a host of other problems.
My bp is always excellent, luckily. I have had type 1 diabetes for 28 years, and also have hyperthyroidism and now possibly celiac disease. I am hoping once I get used to cpap my blood sugars and the depression will be positively effected.
I am overweight. My dad and grandfather both had it and were both really thin, but never got any treatment.

Hey Linda3032,
Wow. That's scary. I think my mother-in-law has something like this because she takes anti-arythmia drugs. She's 89 years old and has had this for as long as I've been in the family -- over 15 years. So has the doctor had you discontinue one of the 2 drugs that could be the culprit? Seems to me that would make sense. Has he/she started you on blood pressure medications or are you just monitoring for now?
Take care,
France

Linda 3032, Get that BP down, see your dr, don't think it will go down on its own, self treatments rarely work.
Ed
I've snored since I was a teenager and when I was married at 23 years old my wife told me I would stop breathing during the night. When I was first married I was 6' 160 lbs. Within about 3 years I gained about 40 lbs. with no real lifestyle change. Just last year, at 32 years old, I finally went and had a sleep study and just in the last 2 months have I been compliant with my therapy.
What scared me into making cpap work is that my brother-in-law, at 24 years old had to get a pacemaker because of his severe OSA.

Well, not wanting to make a big deal of this, but yes, I stopped taking the two medicines some time ago but still had the palpitations -- that's when I had the Holter Monitor test which showed PVCs.Anonymous wrote:Hey Linda3032,

Lots of people have PVCs, but just aren't aware of them. Most of the time they aren't a big deal unless you have heart problems, etc.
The kicker is that in January I had stopped taking Neurontin because my mouth was drying out so badly. So I mentioned that to the doctor last Thursday and asked if that might have anything to do with the palpitations. He didn't think so, but put me back on the Neurontin again. Low and behold, I haven't had one palpitation since Thursday -- that I know of.
I feel so much better now that I'm not having the palpitations. They were making me feel jittery and anxious. Which is totally unlike me. I haven't felt well for two months and it's nice to be back to my old self.
No, the doctor didn't prescribe a blood pressure medicine at this time. But he will next month if the blood pressure remains high. Which it shouldn't stay high if I keep the palpitations under control. So I am crossing my fingers that the Neurontin continues to do it's magic.
So, this thread asks "how old are you?". This week I feel like 45. ....
Thank you for asking, France.

Another Granddaddy
Well I am also 69. Started running out of energy about two years ago. Psychiatrists tried to treat it as depression, didn't work.Hurrican wrote:Alright, here goes. I'm probably the grand daddy of the forum, I'm 69 years old
Went down pulmonary/heart trail, found to be very healthy. Went to sleep lab, they said AHI 5.4, no big deal. Luckily got referred to Stanford who authorized me to be a hose head with an APAP as I scored an AHI of 27.
Been chasing leaks ever since and last Saturday scored an AHI of 1.8 (Thanks Joannie, Bonnie and Claudia) Still slightly tired. Due for a titration on the 20th.
Now that I am getting good treatment, my next goal is to find out why I am waking up so often during the night.( see Encore Pro results on
http://wwwmudie.info/energy
Possible causes as I see them are
1/ Chocolate
2/ Prostate enlargement
3/ Pain from diabetic feet
4/ Withdrawal pains as partner is 100 miles away tonight
5/ Your suggestions welcomed
The wakenings started about 6 months ago and have me real puzzled. But it looks like my latest medical adventure.
I think I must like having chronic killer diseases. So far I have done alcoholism, bipolar, End Stage Renal Disease (kidney failure)and now Sleep Apnea.

Coming back to learn some more
I am 33, was 31 when I was diagnosed and probably have had OSA since I was born.
I am not obese, do not snore and the only clue they had that I might have apnea was that though my depression was well treated through meds, the sleepiness would not go away. When my doc suggested I have a sleep study, I did it to humour him. Wasn't I suprised to find I had severe OSA and should be asleep where I stand? I guess that since I have had it forever, my body must have learned to function as best it could.
I have made a second go at treatment since the beginning of March and actually made it with my mask on through the whole night last night. I still wake up alot from aerophagia, a leak, air in my eye... but it's progress.
