Chinese researchers report CPAP better than oral appliances

Post by SleepySandy » Fri Apr 06, 2007 6:25 pm

There was recently a Chinese study done to compare CPAP to oral appliances. The study showed CPAP was the better treatment.

Here's the link:

Unfortunately, my local news station aired a story about this and made it sound like the Chinese just discovered CPAP as a treatment for sleep apnea.

Oh well, at least it was a story about sleep apnea...

Dental Device was non-adjustable!! To get the best results from a
great Dental Appliance it should be "titrated" just like PAP machine.

Read the ending statement carefully!!

Dental Device was slightly less effective means the user doesn't suffer
with air swallowing, getting tangled with hose all night, can travel the
world without lugging around a heavy machine, doesn't have strap marks
on their face/neck, listen to noisy machine, and all the other joys we
all treasure from our PAP experience, including daily scrubbing of mask
and hose, and lugging bottles of distilled water around. I still don't
understand why over 50% of PAP users stop dealing with them.

Some see the glass as half full. Others see it half empty. It looks
like to me that you just have too much glass for the amount of water
you have.

The Chinese do have a device that shows promise, and low cost. It's a version of Chinese Handcuffs with a cord stuck in one end.

You insert your tongue into the handcuff, pull the tongue forward, and tie the cord behind your head. It keep your tongue from falling back and blocking your airway. Jim

And my wife and I just came back from a Chinese restaurant. We might have posed our medical-study questions during the ordering process, had we only known to ask.
