New Remstar Humidifier Chamber -- LOUD?

Post by juliecab » Tue Mar 06, 2007 11:58 am

I just got a replacement humidifier chjamber for my Remstar Pro -- the attachment point to the CPAP machine has changed so that there is a flap valve insert and a vent -- it makes the machine LOUD now -- it was a new part for the RT too, she put it together, maybe we put it on wrong?

I'm just wondering because my DH also noticed how loud it was and we could hear it was coming from the machine, not from my new ComfortLite 2 mask (which I love, by the way!)

Any suggestions/tips?

It is old? My Resmed started getting louder as it got over a year old. that's not old, but I'm trying to make a point. If it's new, it is probably under warrantee.

Well, actually, because of a different problem, this is a newly reconditioned remstar pro -- the problem is actually the new design on the humidifier chamber -- where it attaches to the machine -- i can attach my OLD humidifier chamber to the same machine and all is quiet on the western front.

I can't even find a picture of the new design online. It is exactly like the old one, but there is a new insert that goes into the tank that has a "flap valve" on it, and then a new little piece snaps on the top that has vents.

Has anyone else seen this yet?

I wanted a spare tank "just in case," so I ordered one from cpap.com last week with some other stuff. It is indeed a new design. They have incorporated a one-way valve so that you can't accidently tip water back into the machine. I haven't tried it yet, but was disappointed they changed the design because it is not interchangeable with the original style. It needs a different coupler. I don't think I will get a chance to try it tonight, but maybe tomorrow I will play with it and see if it adds noise to my auto.

I would much appreciate it if you took a whirl with it to see if its just me or the way we put it together or whether this is a new "feature" of the new chamber....in which case, I need to find a clean model of the old style!

There is a bushing made of a soft substance, could that be coming off with the old tank, and you are installing the lnew tank without the bushing??

About a year and a half ago, my remstar got repaired and Respironics installed the new "baffle" to prevent water from backwashing into the machine.

Are you using the "rubber connector"? It's the clear rubber piece that slides into the cpap opening between the machine and the humidifier.

If the new humidifier and baffle is something new on the market, can you post of picture of it please?

Here is a picture:

The silicone seal now stays on the tank and not the cpap machine, and it has a built in silicone valve to stop water from backflowing into the machine,

I don't know if I will get a chance to try it tonight, but I will try.

OK, it wasn't a big deal to swap out the tanks so I just tried both tanks. There might be a "slight" increase in noise with the new design, but certainly nothing extremely noticeable. I really can't hear much of a difference.

My Remstar is 12 years old. I just replaced the humidifier chamber and WOW is it loud. What a terrible design. It went from being almost silent to sounding like the vacuum cleaner. No way will I use this. I'll just keep using my old chamber.

You've got what we call the "Legacy" REMstar machine. You should probably see about getting a newer machine. The newer ones have a lot of advantages, and insurance may pay for a new one.

However, for now, put in your noisy tank. Turn on the machine, then disconnect the hose from the mask and plug the end with your thumb. Do you hear air gushing out at the humidifier? If so, something is simply broken or missing. Try to figure out where the air is coming from. Is it coming out of the slots on the tank itself, or around the fitting itself.

There's a little flap inside the tank that should cover the slots on the top of the air tank where it connects to the blower unit. It should flip up into place when your turn on the blower. Fiddle withe it to see if you can find a problem.

There is a clear rubbery silicone plastic piece that goes between the old tank and the blower unit. It fits into the opening on the blower unit. You have to remove the old piece. Don't lose it. The new silicone piece goes into the tank opening and has a little flap on it. Be sure that the old piece is removed and the new piece is installed.

Old fitting/coupling to be removed:
