Anyone want to join a mutual Mask Swapping Group, NetMask ?

Post by JohnMudie » Sun Mar 04, 2007 4:44 pm

Seems to me that there are a large number of people in this group with unused masks. (I have an unused Swift). Also there are a large number of people who would like to try a different mask and see if it works for them.

If the above is true, maybe we can create an operation similar to NetFlix to circulate masks.

Deal would be, you offer a mask to share on NetMask. If some-one asks for it, you ship it. When that person receives it in good condition, you get entitled to ask for a mask from some-one else.

You are responsible for cleaning the mask when you receive it. If you don't like it, you offer it up on NetMask again. When it is asked for and received by some-one else , you get a chance to try another. And on and on it goes until you get a mask that works for you (Is that possible )

You pay for shipping the mask.

There are some minor things to work out for a NetMask operation. Who manages it and does the work of advertising available masks. How do you start the thing up ? Can it work on an honor system ? etc.

I think the thing right now is to see if anyone is interested in joining such an operation.

I am

John

John,

I think that is a great idea. Maybe each "trader" can be given a rating, like the ratings system on ebay.

If they ship a mask in a timely manner and it is clean then they get a high approval rating, and others will want to trade with them more. Likewise if someone get's a "poor trader" rating, well, then we know who we want to avoid trading masks with.

Just my 2 cents.

It sounds good in theory, but similar ideas have been proposed before and didn't get off the ground.

To me, if you have a mask you don't like or use, post that it's for sale. Sell it at half price. If the buyer doesn't like it, then they can resell it.

I did that with a Swift; bought it used, tried it for 1 hour and resold it used.

It works and isn't a paperwork nightmare.

This isn't that big of a website project...

Of course I say that now when I'm swamped and couldn't work on it at the moment... Airflow's suffering too.

Anyway, I'd be willing to donate hosting and a website that I'd put together to manage all this if people would use it.

so maybe we ought to find out what happened before reinventing the wheel. To run easily its going to need some fancy software which is beyond my capabilities. I have been thinking about some specs but maybe some market research (poll on how many are interested?) and historical review (what happened the last time this was tried ? ) is the next step.

Any body know what happened last time? What thread was this discussed on ?

John

This sounds like a great idea. As a non-techi, I'd say that since the pool of users is fairly small, the simpler the better. For instance, I find craigslist a very easy way to look for things that I want.

Hopefully I'll be getting my first mask this week. And, even more hopefully, I'll love it. But if not....

I'd be interested in some reasonable way to test out the various masks.

This is something that I think would be very useful. I don't think people would use it every single day or anything, but it would be useful.

So, I'm going to go ahead and see what I come up with. We're gonna go with Mask Trade as the name since it makes sense and was available. I've got all the basics of the site there, just mainly need to fill it in and change the store code to swap instead of purchase, etc.

Give me a week.

I think there were a couple of threads. I found one:

viewtopic.php?p=90716&highlight=donate+masks#90716

Please understand that I'm not against this idea. I'm not one to turn up my nose at a previously owned mask.

And two more:

viewtopic.php?p=7512&highlight=donate+masks#7512

One idea I think would be nice in theory that would be impossible in practice is the "mask collective" idea bit where people form a sharing group and rotate through masks, etc.

Another one that would be rough would the mask library you mention. I'm not going to deal with this other than the website. People will arrange trades and deal with it themselves. Shipping will be managed by them as well.

The idea for this site is simply to allow users who want to trade masks to find each other, arrange the trade, and deal with the fallout themselves. Believe me, there will be plenty of disclaimers.

You say you have a mask available for trade, and what masks you'd accept for the trade. Then, other people can find it, and are only allowed to set up the trade if they have one of the masks that you want listed as available. Once you say you want to trade, you contact each other by email, and voila.
