Snoredog and I aren't calling other masks noisy, just saying that the Soyala's quieter.

I have a Fisher Paykel HC405. It has a white fibrous filter over the exhaust vent that diffuses the air coming out so it does not blow so far. I think it is quiet as well. I do not hear it - only the CPAP machine blower motor. The new RemStar M Seires Auto APAP is quieter than my original RemStar M Series CPAP. I put the machine on an open shelf but inside inside the night stand which helps absorb some of the noise.

My experience is limited but I have now used the Soyala mask for 5 nights now (the nasal cushion version). I have also used the swift and CL2 (simple cushion).

There is a big big difference between the Soyala and these other two masks. The Soyala is not only super quiet (and the CL2 was very quiet I thought compared to the Swift), but the exhaust of the Soyala is also wonderful in that there is no big hurricane coming out.

I don't give the Soyala a great in all aspects. I find that if I press the center of where the hose connects to the mask, it does leak and is noisy. I also find a whistle sometimes when the exhaust blows on the covers (I am so used to having the covers close to my head and am working on retraining myself).

I found the headgear for the Soyala sucked but two elastic bands tied to the buckles and crossed behind my head worked great. I have since rolled up the headgear to one band in back and put some velcro over it to keep it rolled up tight. I had to put some moleskin on the top of the Soyala over the bridge of nose area. I put some guaze under the forehead piece to lessen the imprints on my face. I know I got a few more quirks to work on with it.

However, I give the Soyala a big thumbs up so far even with all these problems. My AHI so far with it is a lot lower than the CL2 was and pretty comparable to the Swift AHI.

Yup, that happens to me too. It's because it's a ball and socket joint instead of just being a straight up swivel, so it gives horizontally as well.

I'm currently experimenting with ways of tightening the joint to see if I can lessen this effect.

Blarg, when did you quit using the Aura - I thought you liked it?

Jules
, the Aura (Invacare Twilight NP), vents up over the head. You can pull your covers up over your nose and it won't make a sound. It seals well too if you use the stretchy strap across the pillows.

A week and a half ago.

I find I mouth breathe when I don't mash my head up against the headboard, and the headgear on the Aura prevents this. Yeah, yeah, I'm going to decapitate it, but the Soyala's working wonderfully for now, so I'll get on it eventually. I certainly haven't given up on the Aura.

The Aura's a cement mixer compared to the Soyala. Not to say it's noisy, it's NOT, it's just a lot noisier than the Soyala. I like it a lot, but quiet is not one of its strong suits IMHO.

Hi, and Welcome!
I only know about the nasal pillow systems -
Used the Swift and the Breeze - Swift noisier than the Breeze. Breeze not noisy but the exhaust comes out like a jet, bothered my husband a lot. Now I use the ComfortLite 2 and we are both happy. It has an exhaust port but it is fenestrated and not as much as a blast as the Breeze, more diffuse. And very very quiet. Sometimes I reach up at night to make sure it is still there! I also found that sometimes if we are just falling asleep and I sense it is bothering my husband (the exhaust not the noise), I angle my chin upwards just a fraction and the air no longer falls on him. He also has developed a way to "snuggle low", his head slightly lower on his pillow than mine is on my pillow, thus avoiding the breeze.
I haven't used the Aura/Twilight/Headrest - but heard it is also good in this category.
GOOD LUCK!!!
AII

Good luck and if you get ideas post them. I did some looking last night trying to take the three hooks from the front of the mask and put something there to keep the ball/socket joint down some. The best I got was using some dental floss to form floss triangles insde the center and wasn't sure how much it was going to stop the slippage. I also tried a piece of nylon mesh but couldn't get the front back on completely. I think a rig of toothpicks cut and glued together right put inside might help. I will work more on this but it was late last night when I worked on it.

I have to agree with the earlier post about the HC405 being very quiet and virtually no exhaust air blowing out from it and it's really cheap to boot so if you're paying out of pocket, you might want to look into it.

I am also looking for a new quiet nasal mask/pillow.
I am currently using SomnoPlus, which is quiet most of the time,
but the cushion is very rough and leaving tracks on my nose.
It is not sealing well when I sleep on my side.

In the past I had used Activa, which was very loud compared to SomnoPlus.

I am now considering nasal masks from F&P and Respironics.

My APAP pressure range is 10.5-16

So my new nasal mask should:
1) be quiet
2) seal well up to pressure of 16
3) have a flexible cushion, not leak when I sleep on my side, be easy on my face.
4) not be any ResMed product, due to past experiences.

Nasal Mask Makes nose itch

Post by vitomacdoc » Sat Feb 17, 2007 10:42 pm

I now have the Ultra Mirage II nasal mask. It is quieter than the mirage nose pillows, but I now wake up every 2 hours.

I am not sure what the problem is, but my nose gets very itchy, and I awake to rip off my mask so I can scratch.

Anyone else with this issue? I am hesitant to purchase the Soyola for fear it will have the same effect.

I would like to try the Optilife, anyone have experience with this mask?
