Question Regarding New Mask

Post by Zaiforce » Wed Nov 20, 2024 5:09 pm

Hi all,

Me again lol, I am sorry for the amount of threads I post but I am still learning and this place is so helpful!

My mother is using a Resmed Lumis 150 VPAP ST Bi-level machine with quite high pressures at 20 IPAP / 10 EPAP.

She is looking to change from the Fisher & Paykel Evora full face mask to either the Resmed AirFit F30 or AirFit F40 mask, since she believes she would prefer to have magnetic clips instead of the latch type clips that the Evora mask uses.

Whilst doing some research on these Resmed masks, I noticed that Resmed state you need to change your mask setting in your machine to "Pillows" for the AirFit F40 mask, even though it is a full face mask.

I looked at her current setting on her machine and it is currently set to "Full Face" whilst using the Evora mask.

If she does choose to go with the AirFit F40 mask, is it safe to change this setting to "Pillows"? Could that have an affect on her therapy? I am nervous about changing settings as I don't understand much about them and it is vital that this machine is working right for my mother as the suffers from severe co2 build up without it (she had 3 x ICU stays due to type 2 respiratory failure which led to her getting put onto a BiPAP machine).

Perhaps she would be better off switching to the AirFit F30 mask instead, since it also has magnetic clips and I cannot see anything about needing to change the setting for that mask.

In addition, are there any other settings that need to be adjusted or changed when changing to a new brand/type of mask? She has only ever used the Fisher & Paykel Evora full face mask, nothing else, so I am unsure what the process is when changing to a new mask.

We did have a lot of leaks with the Evora mask initially due to jaw drop (she is a mouth breather), but we corrected that by using a knightsbridge chin strap which she uses every night and prevents her jaw from dropping too much.

Thank you all for any help/advice :)

There's a reason ResMed wants you to use the "pillows" setting even if the F40 is technically a full face mask.
It's important. So just do it if that is the mask you want to try.
It has more to do with resistance and dead space.
ResMed has a couple of other masks that ResMed says to use the pillows setting and they aren't nasal pillow only masks.

Thank you, do you know what the setting should be for the Resmed AirFit F30? I can't seem to find if the setting needs to be changed to pillow for that mask or not.

On all ResMed masks...and the paperwork literature (That user guide that not many people bother to look at) that comes with masks will usually clearly state what mask setting to be using. I know when I tried the N30 (which is an under the nose cushion mask) it said to use "pillows" setting with it.

It's in the mask user guide...page 6
https://document.resmed.com/documents/p ... er_eng.pdf
Clearly says the mask setting should be "full face" under technical specifications.
