Total time spent in Apnea per night

Post by jskinner » Tue Feb 06, 2007 11:01 am

I was into my DME today picking up a PAPillow and got talking with them about my recent nasal issues. I brought up the fact that the nasal issue was really impacting my apnea treatment. I told her I have been having some nights where I spend as much as 20-30 minutes in Apena. I asked her what a typical time in apnea would be for someone on CPAP (Even though I had an idea what the correct answer was). She said she didn't really know but said she didn't think 20-30 minutes was bad!

I'm pretty sure 20-30 minutes is quite bad.

I've become convinced while monitoring my own treatment that both 'Time in Apnea' (Total time not duration) and 'Number of Events' is a better predictor of how apnea is really affecting someone. Its seem like the medical community only focuses on AHI but it doesn't take into account important variables such as sleeping time.

My one month average nightly 'time spend in apnea' is 15 minutes. This is over fives times the value what I was having before I started having nasal problems.

So my question to all of you is what is your one month average of total 'time in apnea' per night. Maybe include your average AHI over the month as well. I'd like to get a better feel for what a typical cumulative 'time in apnea' really is.

Hello James...

I would think minutes of apnea has to be a bad thing for sure!!

I average 4 apneas in a 30 day period which average 12 seconds each time, however I get the idea 12 seconds is the minimum.

The interesting part is I have used the pulse oximeter on two nights that the machine said I had an apnea (just lucked out those were the two nights) and the oximeter data never varied more than a point or two (97 to 96, and 97 to 95 using 4 second retrieval points) which happens all night long anyway so technically they weren't hypopneas or apneas using the medicare standard of scoring hypopneas/apneas which have to have more than a 4 point drop to be officially scored, at least that is what the sleep labs here tell me.

I assume your sense of well feeling has declined recently??

My typical AHI is 1.2 to 2.5

I remember us talking awhile back about pulse oximeters and was wondering if you were still thinking about getting one??

Marc

Apnea times

Post by Rafe » Tue Feb 06, 2007 11:20 am

According to the data, I'm averaging AHI's less than 1 (between 0 and 0.7) with time in apnea between 0 and a few seconds. Sometimes I get 1 or 2 total events, but 0 seconds in apnea. Not sure how that happens.

PSG - AHI= 73.21; Low SaO2=62%

Titration result: 12 cm H20; AHI-0.4; lowest SaO2=95%

according to your fine software, I've avg 16.5 Seconds nightly for the last 30 days. My worst night in 30 days was 65 seconds. Your DME is avg, they don't have a clue. That's time not breathing, I consider that to be real important. Jim

Like I said, it's a poor mans O2 gauge.

I only have a few recorded apneas a month (haven't had any in the last 7 nights or more) and when I do, their duration is about 10 to 12 seconds. I think my long(er) term average is about 3 - 4 seconds.

James,

My last full month numbers from EPA are:

Average daily "Time in Apnea" = 1.9 minutes
"Average Apnea Duration" = 17.3 Seconds
"Total Apnea's" = 6.9
"AHI" = 1.7
Hope the data helps.

I'm currently running EPA version 8.7. Is this the latest version?
A request... could you add the .x to your download page i.e. Download Version 0.8.x

Thanks again for all your efforts and a superb piece of software.

Very much so. I feel almost as bad as before CPAP treatment. I can hardly bear it some days now.

Haven't been feeling well enough to think much about that. I hope to explore that more sometime.

Yeah, Jim, I'd say its bad. I'd have to figure my average duration of apnea by hand 'cause I've got a Resmed (so THAT "ain't" a gonna happen) but:

Last 28 days:
AHI =17.5
AI = 0.8
HI = 16.1 (I know! That doesn't figure right, but that's AutoScan's math, not mine)

% Time In Apnea 0.3%

Since I slept 197:30 hours in that 28 days I figured that I spent 59:19 hours in apnea. (That's scarey: pitting "my" math against Resmed's!)

Slinky,

I think your decimal place is off. You said 0.3% not 3%.

My calculation would be 197.5 * 0.003 / 28 * 60

This would give about 1.27 minutes in apnea per night?

Heck of a lot better than my 15

One month average - Hmm . . ., probably under two minutes per night in apnea

AHI averages around 4
AI around 1
HI around 3

James, have you noticed any pattern to when your long apneas occur?

Regards,
Bill
