Conjunctivitis from Cpap?

Post by MC23 » Sun Oct 15, 2023 9:14 pm

Hi, Im having issues my eyes lately and I'm wondering if anyone else could shed some light on it. I'm on a fairly high pressure cpap machine and in the last year I went from a mask go nasal pillows. I've noticed I've been having eye issues in the last 6 months or so. My doctor suspected bacterial conjunctivitis so I got the drops etc and it cleared up but it keeps returning. The pillows fit fine, they aren't blowing air in my eyes or anything like that. I don't use a humidifier. Im just wondering has anyone had eye issues since using pillows etc?

Just looking for some advice if anyone has had similar issues. Thanks!

"What is the main cause of conjunctivitis?

Most cases of pink eye are caused by adenovirus but also can be caused by other viruses, including herpes simplex virus and varicella-zoster virus. Both viral and bacterial conjunctivitis can occur along with colds or symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as a sore throat."

Considering that Pink Eye is caused by microbes and your CPAP can't manufacture microbes, I'd say that the chances that your machine is causing your infection are pretty slim.

For some, pressurized air can blow from your nose into your tear ducts and from there into you eyes, causing dryness and irritation.
When it's very bad, silicone plugs put into the tear ducts (medical procedure) can be a solution.

Go to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist), ask them specifically to check your eyes for dryness.

Try using a daily regime of humidifying eye drops / artificial tears - look for those that have no preservative. Most - if not all - are OTC.

Pink Eye (conjunctivitis) is not the same thing as dry eyes.

Having severe dry eye may increase the possibility of developing pink eye. Tears help to protect the surface of the eye from infection and inflammation, so if you don't have adequate tears, you may be at a higher risk for conjunctivitis.

Yes, thank you Granny. What did I say?

Certainly, having dry eye issues can lead to other problems.

If I remember correctly, you said, "Hello, Boo-boo baby."

(I might be wrong about that.)

I keep a bottle of artificial tears by my cpap.
When the sweet resmed breezes blow me a desert,
I drop in an instant oasis, and all is well.
This frog doesn't look good with red eyes.

That's what you remember? Hmmm, not saying that I didn't say that, but I don't recall it at this point in time.
