Sleep scores
Sleep scores
Greetings. I've been using my Phillips DreamStation for over a decade and it's changed my life. I've talked to a few others who have been diagnosed and started with a CPAP machine. I'm no expert but have been very successful at sticking with the treatment. Most of those I've talked to have given up despite my advice to stick it out. My best friend used his for a month and said he wanted to toss it across the room saying, "The damn thing doesn't work." I assured him it does and it may save his life but it's now stuck in a closet somewhere.
My brother has been on his machine for a week now and despite a tough first night now loves it. I've spent a lot of time advising and encouraging him. I don't know the make/model of his machine but he's downloaded the app, which measures his sleep scores. My question: My Fitbit gives me sleep scores and I average 83-84/100, which is pretty good. After about four years of experience I've had only 5-6 scores over 90. My brother says his scores have ranged from a low of 92 to 98; I think his app inflates the scores. I'm skeptical of those high scores but am asking about the experience of others. Is it possible to have seven scores of 92 or more?

Re: Sleep scores
Scores aren't really comparable from one device to the next or one person to the next. Numbers are mostly given for trending purposes, to see if there is improvement or lack thereof.
When PAP users here speak of scores they often mean AHI reported by home machines or as seen in OSCAR.
Better to compete with oneself rather than with one's brother to prevent getting banished to the wilderness.

Re: Sleep scores
Forget these scoring apps. Look at the data on your machine's display - AHI, 95% leak, 95% pressure.
If there are problems, dig deeper with OSCAR or, for the less technically inclined, the free version of SleepHQ. There are plenty of cpaptalk members eager to help you.
Once you have made sure your CPAP therapy is working well, you can go back to your sleep apps and work on good sleep hygiene.

Re: Sleep scores
Even if the reports erred on the plus side, would the better motivation be worth it?

Re: Sleep scores
On second thought, are you comparing your FitBit scores to his CPAP app scores? The FitBit measures sleep. CPAP apps measure breathing and some machine functions but not sleep. You might be comparing apples and aardvarks.MoneyGuy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 1:50 pmMy Fitbit gives me sleep scores and I average 83-84/100, which is pretty good. Re: Sleep scores
I think the MyAir score factors in length of sleep session, number of mask-offs, and how many times I post plugs for ResMed products on Internet forums.

Re: Sleep scores
Remember these machines are clueless when it comes to telling us how much we actually slept or didn't sleep. They can't tell asleep vs awake at all.
Just because we have a "sleep session" doesn't mean we always sleep.

I wish it were that easy.
My machine was used for a little over 7 hours last night but the insomnia monster came for a visit last night and I probably got a little over 5 hours of fragmented sleep. Crappy night for sure and I feel it today. I think I need more drugs.

Back to "sleep scores"....just numbers that don't guarantee squat. Sophomoric and useless IMHO.
But whatever floats someone's boat is fine with me.

Re: Sleep scores
True of all the sleep gizmo thingies.
And that's what allows me to cheat to get high score and a gold star.
And all I really care about is getting a higher score than Zonker.
I miss me my MyAir now that all I can do is play cards in the clouds.

Re: Sleep scores
Am I the only one who has honestly never ever used My Air for anything?

Re: Sleep scores
I may be shameless enough to play and sing in front of people who humor me, but that doesn't mean I'm actually any good at it.
I'm just jealous of your humor, people skills, and popularity around here.
So I may have to switch back to one of my connected machines for a while so I can brag about any awards I may earn in MyAir, just to bolster my competitive streak and self-esteem.
I mean, sleep is, after all, a game, so it has to have scores!
Re: Sleep scores
Well, it's cheaper for people than lotto (which has rightly been described as 'a tax on people who are bad at math'), and nobody has been severely hurt playing it that I know of, so we might as well set up a fantasy MyAir League to have one more thing to fight over online.
The reminders and tracking of mask-on time and automatic AHI averages have the potential to be useful in my opinion. And it can be a lot less depressing than keeping up with the national news.
So let's hear it for the practical MyAir patient empowerment movement!
Re: Sleep scores
If I read the above correctly, the issue is comparing "sleep scores".MoneyGuy wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 1:50 pmMy question: My Fitbit gives me sleep scores and I average 83-84/100, which is pretty good. And, apparently the brothers are using different sleep apps one of which apps is suspected of "inflating the score" by the user of the app the gives him a lower score.
Money can be counted and converted from one currency to another.
Not so scoring devices.
You have to have identical hardware (down the last firmware version) and identical apps to gain any info from the comparison.

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Re: Sleep scores
nope. me neither. although, in all honesty, there doesn't seem to be that many people showing up here who use it.
maybe they just don't talk about it?
