Phillips Respironics DS1 Test Results are in
Phillips Respironics DS1 Test Results are in
I wanted to share with the community that the test results are in. It's a bit of a read but the short story is the foam from the original Dream Station 1s are safe, per Phillips Respironics. Mind you they do state other agencies may come to different conclusions based off the data. https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... src-update

The NHS was correct 19 months ago. Much ado about nothing. Chemophobes should retreat. (But they won't.)
NHS June 23, 2021
Biological safety risk assessment (based on the currently available data)
The available evidence suggests:
Volatile organic chemicals of concern (Dimethyl Diazine and Phenol, 2,6-bis (1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-(1-methylpropyl) are not detectable 24 hours after the first ‘out of box’ use of the device.
Levels of diethylene glycol detected were within an acceptable margin of safety.
The degradation by-products Toluene Diamine and Toluene Diisocyanate are classified by IARC as Group 2B carcinogens. This category is used for chemicals where there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and less than sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals.
Laboratory analysis found that as the foam degraded it tended to stick to nearby surfaces as well as itself. This reduces the risk of respirable particles entering the breathing circuit.
Degradation of the polyurethane foam can be accelerated by off-label use of ozone decontamination or use in environments with high humidity and temperature, neither of which apply in the UK.
Available evidence suggests that most degraded foam particles are too big to be inhaled.
Diisocyanate is associated with isocyanate-induced asthma in a very small number of patients. For sensitised patients even low concentrations can cause adverse effects.
The available evidence suggests that the risks to patients of ceasing to use these devices significantly outweigh the biological safety risks if patients do not have ready access to an alternative.

Philips Respironics has total responsibility for starting this voluntary recall and the fear and concern It has caused users of their equipment. personally I didn't think it was a issue at first but if Philips Respironics states it is and issues a voluntary recall what are we users to think?
If you didn't use Ozone to clean your Cpap the foam inside the Dreamstation 1 should be in good condition. It's the older System ones where Age has caused the Foam to breakdown without ozone use that you might find a issue. I removed the foam from Two systems one and the 6 year old 560 was in very good condition. The 8 year old 550 however did show signs of foam deterioration on one corner with pieces breaking off.

Yep, Philips scared the s*** out of tens of thousands. Many quit using their CPAPs and suffered for it.jtravel wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 8:14 amPhilips Respironics has total responsibility for starting this voluntary recall and the fear and concern It has caused users of their equipment. personally I didn't think it was a issue at first but if Philips Respironics states it is and issues a voluntary recall what are we users to think?

Lesson Learned
On the upside: Many will learn, and avoid that manufacturer.
Maybe some day, Philips will pay for their misdeeds.
If not in the courts, then in the marketplace.

I have no animosity against Philips they replaced my old system ones with New DS2 and although the process was clunky I feel they had good intentions and tried to make things right.
some companies have been known to deny problems and issues or cover them up and mitigate quietly in the background. Let those harmed argue and attempt to prove in Court but deny you have a problem even if you lose in court.
This sadly may be a situation where Philips tried to do the right thing but overreacted and made the situation much worse than it ever needed to be.
This does not change the Fact that my Resmed autoset 10 is a far superior machine in everyway important to me and I would not choose to buy a Philips at this point in time.

I found Phillips' initial communications poor, not clear enough early on what the concern was.

I asked Pugsy if she would make it a sticky.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sat Feb 11, 2023 10:17 pmWhy is this a sticky?

In theory their findings was the conclusion to the saga they started.

The study referred to is a study by Philips. They are trying to control the narrative in light of the most chaotic and incompetent recall I have ever seen. Nocompany ever tries to do the right thing when you are talking the kind of money that Phillips is losing.jtravel wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:17 amsome companies have been known to deny problems and issues or cover them up and mitigate quietly in the background. I’ll wait until an unbiased entity comes up with a coherent report.

Occasional (rare, actually) visitor Capt Midnight here with an observation and opinion.
I was a happy user of the DS1 and when the recall happened, I chose to continue using my machine. (I never use O3 cleaners, and I never even heat my humidity.) No health or irritations issues then or now. As one who worked a career in public health, I generally know when to worry, and I had no concerns.
Fast forward, I just received a replacement (looks like a DS1). Fine, thanks, not really needed until my current machine ages out.
Lots of choices among us OSA patients (I never say "victims"). I also happen to have a very nice Autoset 10 that I used for a couple of years. It worked well, but the DS1 works better for me. And this is after careful tweaking of my APAP pressures and ranges and comparing between the units. We are all different and choices are good things.
I haven't visited here for a few years, so I'll read a few threads and catch up on the latest xpap buzz.
Best regards all!
