Hi all,
Recently started CPAP therapy on a ResMed Airsense 10 using an N30i cushion mask. The fit is great and I’m beginning to tolerate falling to sleep at low pressure and hoping to build from here.
I’m confused however about the correct breathing technique. I’ve always assumed breathing through the nose and out the mouth is the right way to breathe, but I’m pretty sure that’s not correct with a nose cushion mask. The instruction manual has no info regarding breathing, only how to fit and clean the mask.
I’ve read conflicting info online, but most of what I’ve read points to breathing out the nose back into the mask. Im adjusting to using CPAP at rather low pressure (4.2 - 5.2) so I’m worried I’ll be re-breathing at this low rate. I’ve purchased some tape to close my mouth in an attempt to train myself to breathe through the nose only, if need be.
Is it ok to breathe out through the mouth using a nose cushion mask? Does it diminish the effectiveness of CPAP therapy? Should I be aiming to breathe in-and-out of my nose only?
My GP is works limited hours at best of times and is hard to get a hold of this time of year. I’m reaching out to online to those experienced users who are probably more knowledgable then he is in this regard.

No.
Breathe only through your nose.
Re-breathing is not a problem. That's what the vent is for.
Millions of people use CPAP every night. If re-breathing was an issue, it would be reported, *a lot*. It's not.
Breathing out through your mouth can cause problems, basicly a huge leak.

DS said it well.
I would never sleep if i had to think about breathing out through my mouth and in thru the nose.
practice keeping your tongue on your palate so that your mouth is closed from airflow.
I have the n30 which is basically the same as your mask without the hoses going up the side of the head. It’s a nice comfy mask.
Plenty of help to be had here. Read the stickies and maybe make this thread your own “home “ so people can follow your journey.

Get an SD card for your machine if it has a slot (i don’t know the 10s) and a card reader if you don’t already have one on your computer. This will help you optimize therapy as you creep up to find the new comfy pressure that helps keep you sleeping well.
That type of mask does well with a teeny tiny itty bit of lanolin on the bottom of your nasal nares. Spot check somewhere like your hands that you don’t have a reaction to it. There’s no petroleum-100% lanolin that helps keep a tacky feel on your nose to keep a good seal. after i smear a tiny bit, I usually do a gentle dab to take some extra off. This tube could last 8-9 m maybe more (i’ve been using on my hands too and am at 6 m with first tube). found in breastfeeding aisle at walmart, grocery, pharmacies.

If you breathe in through the nose, you breathe out through the nose.
If you breathe in through the mouth and out through the nose,
you are using S.C.U.B.A. gear.
Cpap is way easier.

Re: Resmed AirSense 10, N30i cushion mask. How to breathe?
Thank you all for the advice, that answered the message quite definitively. Is there a particular setting on the Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset that can help with pressure breathing out the nose back into the mask?
Re: Resmed AirSense 10, N30i cushion mask. How to breathe?
EPR or exhale pressure relief.
Your settings will eventually need to be adjusted when using it, which i know you’re working on.
