iirc petroleum jelly can cause silicone to break down.

In my humble opinion, this is more a rumor than a proven fact.
No one has linked to an actual study proving the assertion.
Silicone gaskets are everywhere, and aside from staining
by organic pigments/dyes, nothing appears to affect them.

I'm just going to leave this here. YMMV

Sometimes applying Vaseline to the inside rim of your nose may reduce the soreness.
Petroleum-based products will damage the mask so avoid direct contact.

Edit: besides that, the Ayrs with aloe is designed to go IN the nose, if needed and only costs about $4.

It's interesting because I have read people here recommend Neosporin for nasal sores, and that contains....petrolatum.

I am trying KY jelly (with no improvement so far) but since I see my primary later this week I'll ask her to take a look at it. I will try the Ayr.

The same spot gets sore off and on ever since I started cpap in early 2017. I think I have a piece of cartilage there that sticks out enough for the nasal pillow to rub against it, haven't had a problem anywhere else. So it seems like a permanent problem. I think I will try a nasal cushion mask instead of nasal pillows.

I didn’t realize that neosporin had petrolatum. Never use the stuff except rarely and not on my face. Good catch.

I use the N30 and I love it. Not sure where the boo boo is but it’s pretty gentle (n30).

Edit: I have a hard time with P10 due to a similar sounding issue so I feel your pain if that’s the case.

I believe that routine repeated use of topical antibiotics has somewhat fallen out of favor with dermatologists in recent years because of the risks of contact allergic reactions and resistance:

"Repeated or long-term use of topical antibiotics and an existing skin barrier defect are risk factors for the development of CA [contact allergies]. In many cases, topical antibiotic treatment is not necessary with the use of modern antiseptics. My understanding as a layman is that temporary topical use of pertroleum products may be no big deal and a fairly common practice. However, putting them inside the nose every night (which is what some were doing) could be considered another beast entirely, since that would technically not be topical and thus not in medical harmony with the instructions that come written on the products.

My use of nasal pillows was helped dramatically by using the o-ring mod I read about in this forum:




That, for me, has allowed for a better seal with a looser mask and with no need to replace the pillows for months/years.

That's where I learned about using o-rings. The idea is to put something firm and stable on the "necks" of the pillows to lessen slightly the "trampolining" of the pillows as they age so that they don't travel and compress and give too much and move around needlessly during the night.

I think Janknitz may be the expert. But you just find the right size of o-ring and then roll it over the pillow down onto the neck, one (or two, if necessary) below each pillow, as seen in the pictures in my post above.

Funny reading those old threads. I know it wasn't that long ago but our masks werent even invented then I dont think.

Going back to read old threads and posts by -SWS and Rested Gal was how I spent my time during my first year when I first arrived here.

Well worth it. A true education. And better than a combination drama/mystery/comedy/history novel that plays out in real time. Often PG-13, but highly entertaining back in those wild-west-gunslinger times in forums where genius coexisted simultaneously with the flash riots and guest flames.

I mention the mod in this thread because a looser mask may prevent soreness of nares for some pillows users who tend to overtighten in an attempt to maintain a seal. That, in turn, may lessen the perception of needing a lubricant:

Well three nights of the N30i and so far so good. No large leaks to speak of, which amazes me, given I could not get the P30i to stop massive leaking when I tried it.
