Tips for Keeping Mask On

Post by thomzeyl » Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:23 pm

Well, I've been on CPAP for about 1 1/2 years. Frustratingly I wake up nightly with the mask off. Don't remember taking it off. Have had my pressure increased to 9 from 7, to no avail (after analysis)

I'm using a Resmed Elite S8, Aussie tube, and Aura/Twilght pillows OR Swift Mirage Nasal Pillows while traveling (no difference )

Any tips or thoughts?

When using the aura/twilight pillows, try Rested Gals pantyhose strap. It will make it just a bit more difficult to remove the mask.

Here are a bunch of links for the mask;

When using the swift try using a piece of tape over one of the side straps. This might cause just enough discomfort when pulled to remind you to leave it on.

I hope someone can help me as well. I seem to be having the same problem, my mask is a F&P 431. I have no idea when I take the mask off, but I believe I must be getting rainout and thats why I take it off. When the mask does last the whole night, and I wake up in the morning, my mask and face are all wet, any suggestions or help??? Thanks in advance.

What is the humidifier set on? Rain out is from too much moisture. If you are using the HH turn it down and see if it helps. A hose cover (comfortsleeve.com) will help. If you keep your room very cool you may need the Aussie heated hose.

My semi-solution for rainout was to turn the humidity down to it's lowest level, use the aussie heated hose, cover that with another hose cover (comfort sleeve I think is the name), and to raise the overnight temperature in our house by 1 degree. All of those combined has ceased 99% of the rainout I was getting.
Good luck, I hope it works for you.

Tips for Keeping Mask On

Post by thomzeyl » Thu Jan 25, 2007 9:08 pm

Thought of two things and tried both-they work

1. The strings that some people use to keep their glasses hanging on their chest when they don't wear them. I put them on the top restraining strap of the mask (the one that loops closed with velcro) They hung under my chin loosely and I put them behind my ears. That way if I try to flip off the mask in my sleep, it catches the mask, and I wake up......

2. The second is basically a variant of the above. I also fashioned a neck loop from medical gauze, commonly called "Kling" which is stretchy ( the kind you would use to secure a 2x2' or 4x4" gauze pad to your leg). It can be bought in any medical supply store, and commonly comes in 4" X 4 feet lengths. It's soft and can be folded as you want. I looped it as above. It can also be used instead of panty hose (as directed by Rested Gal) for those who have panty-hose phobia!

use the tiara topaz chin strap. Put it on after you have already put the mask on.
