N 20 mask mod

Post by bucko » Fri Oct 14, 2022 5:54 pm

I like the N20 nasal mask EXCEPT that it shoots air out of the front port very strong. I would call it a blast with my pressure at 10. If I turn sideways, I can see my wife's hair actually blowing. Needless to say she does not like it at all.

So after playing around, I found a perfect solution. Take a Autoset filter and cut it in half. Lay it across to outside of the air vent and use a rubberband to secure it. Place the band so that it is below the vent holes in the direction of the hose. So it is laying over the vent sort of like a flap. Thats all it takes. Holding your hand 1 inch in front of the mask, you feel no air! The mask vent does it's job same as before!

I guess if you don't pass out from Carbon Dioxide poisoning, the flap is doing a good job. The manufacturers do a lot of testing to determine the correct amount of venting for their masks. It's dangerous to mess with it.

I'm pretty sure I read here that this was safe to do as the filter still let carbon dioxide through. People were doing it with the bleep. I myself have on occasion used a bread tie to strap on a filter to my N-20.

THis mod has nothing to do with venting. The air volume being vented out has passed out of the vent already and then is misdirected/diffused. The mask system does not know anything has changed.

Interesting idea. I've definitely had issues with the forceful stream of air coming out of the N20.

Thanks for the post.

I've been using my mod for the past few days with no effects to the mask function or my Oscar data. All is normal and no extra sounds or blast of air shooting out.
I call it a success on all fronts.

I’ve been doing this for years with no issues. I cut a bit of resmed filter a bit larger than the vent, then cut out a vent sized hole in some stretch tape which then holds the filter down. Works perfectly, coupled with the airtouch cushion, it turns the N20 into a perfect mask for me.

I do wish resmed would add a diffuser, this is one of their most popular masks, it seems like a no-brainer way to improve it.
