Using backpack as carry-on with cpap machine

Post by Billy7Goat » Fri Sep 09, 2022 1:28 pm

I have been experimenting with different backpacks that contain my CPAP stuff for travel. Unfortunately the travel machines are so loud, I cannot sleep with them. So, I have the Resmed Airsense 10, the power supply, hose with a one foot extension, mask and headgear (NO water storage), tape, extra headgear and magnets, extra mask, and the Pilot-24 Lite Battery Pack for ResMed as a backup PS and to charge other things when needed. I carry extras as I have broken the magnets off the headgear which snapped in half so they could not be fixed. it is not that much extra room and gives peace of mind. Cross your fingers the machine does not break on a trip.

I can get everything except the extras into 2 S-ZONE Water Resistant Camera Insert Bags - Exterior Size: 10.2" x 6" x 4.7" (Amazon). This allows me to put those two cases into about any backpack with laptop, tablet, and usually a bunch of other stuff instead of using the giant case that comes with it which screams CPAP user.

The camera inserts are a bit bulky and I will be trying a very padded backpack with shelves in it that can work as a camera bag that I can slide the machine into and out quickly for TSA and use one travel cube for the rest. I cannot find any youtube videos with others doing this so they can minimize the number of bags to carry. It seems all the cpap videos with special bags are huge.

If you have something similar, can you post what you have found works well for you?

Check w/airline about the size of the battery.
As long as you are within their carryon limits it won't matter but if you are looking for a medical baggage exemption then you shouldn't mix items that aren't exempt in that same bag. I always include things that will be used with/for the cpap and any other exemptions like meds.

Start here: https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe/mo ... /?hazmat=7

As I recall the Pilot 24 lite is < 100 Wh, so should be fine. But to be safe check with each airline you use as they may have different rules.

In a rational common-sense world, the airlines and FAA would devise a common set of rules to which all parties would agree. Such rules would apply to CPAP stuff, battery capacity for Portable Oxygen Concentrators, and other medical concerns. HOWEVER that is not the case. Different airlines have different requirements and rules. Hence the need to check with YOUR airline well in advance. Last minute requests may not be answered in time.

Case in point: Portable Oxygen Concentrators. Some airlines require that the passenger have enough batteries for 1.25x the hours in the air. Others require 1.5x. Others require 1.5x the amount in the air PLUS the amount of time in the terminal for plane changes. Frustrating!

You'd rather someone sue the airlines because they ran out of oxygen? (re your other recent comment about lawsuits)
