US/Chinese CPAP Supplies?

Post by manich » Wed Sep 07, 2022 9:22 am

So I was given a ResVent iBreeze 20A as my first machine 2 months ago by my DME. Being on fixed income, not much, I decided to take it and let Medicare cover it. I recently saw that the iBreeze was given EUA due to supply chain issues. I worry about anything health related made in China, but the EUA is even more worrying, especially since it involves breathing air every night that moves thru Chinese plastic. My question is are the ResMed and Respironics masks and tube materials all made in US? I have the Dreamwear mask and am thinking of replacing the Resvent tube (Chinese?) with a non-Chinese tube. That will leave only the machine itself Chinese. I know with my health at stake I should try and come up with the money out of pocket to buy a ResMed machine, but things could become tight right now just getting a $20,000 dental surgery estimate, due to an auto accident that happened 55 years ago.

So if you have a good relationship with your Dr. and the doc is willing to help he can write another Equipment Order and specify the cpap you want - Resmed AS10 Autoset - "Do Not Substitute".

But I think you will have to help the doc come up with a reason why your current cpap is not working. If this doc isn't willing I would find another doc.

On second thought, they probably shouldn't.

To put things in perspective - the Philips Respironics machines that were full of cancer foam were made in the USA.

I think you're worrying about nothing.

I think a lot of the "OEM" supplies for the big companies are made in China or elsewhere in Asia anyway. We've noted differences between the nasal pillows, depending on WHERE they are made, for the same company.

I have read alot on these CPAP boards to avoid Resvent since it was a Chinese machine. Glad to now know I should not have concerns.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ResMed
ResMed employs more than 8,000 employees worldwide as of June 2022.[2] The company operates in more than 140 countries worldwide[3] and has manufacturing facilities in Australia, Singapore, France, and the United States.
Machines and other products made by ResMed might be made in Singapore.

It's not so much where something might be made as much as maybe who is making it.
The problem (or one of the problems) I have with ResVent stuff is they sort of stole part of the ResMed name and use it...makes me wonder why. I do think it was done on purpose and that purpose was to mislead people. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Yes, Resmed machines with a serial starting with 23 are made in Singapore. One of my favourite places - I'm heading up there again in a few weeks for the grand prix. But it's important to remember that Singapore is not China. It's not attached to China (like Hong Kong), nor really anywhere near China. Its labour costs are not especially low and it has one of the highest GDP/capita in the world (well ahead of the USA and Australia).

When I buy masks, most of them come with an instruction booklet that discloses where the mask was made. Lots of people throw out the books, though.

I don't know where my machine was made. If not in the home country of the manufacturer, (Australia in the case of ResMed), it was made either (1) in another country by the OEM manufacturer or (2) in another country by another company under license from the OEM and subject to a detailed list of specifications and quality criteria dictated by the OEM. Large reputable companies don't want their names and reputations besmirched by shoddy goods with their name on it.

I agree with OP that the ResVent was kinda stealing the ResMed name, or at least leaning on their reputation, and allowing/fooling the buyer into thinking it was a ResMed machine -- if the buyer is not paying attention. Please recall the pattern of certain countries copy-catting automobiles, computers and other goods invented in and made in the USA.

Biggest majority of Resmed US machines were made in Singapore.
Country of origin is on the label with the serial number.
