Nervous Anticipation

Post by jackr » Mon Jan 22, 2007 1:56 pm

So I just called the sleep center and they have the report from my first sleep study last week. They said the doctor makes his calls at the end of the day and will be calling me then.

I don't know why I have nervous anticipation. I know I have OSA. Just dont know how severe. Looking forward to getting my second sleep study so I can test out a cpap and start the road to recovery.

Just got off the phone with the doctor. We only spoke for a few seconds. I averaged 29 apneas an hour. So next tuesday I am back to try the cpap machine.

I have pretty much decided that I want a M Series Auto C-Flex CPAP but have to see what the doctor thinks. I feel like the people on the forum have a lot more info on the details of treatment then the doctors do so I want to make sure I am not bullied into a machine that I will have to replace soon. I am paying for it myself. My durable medical equipment deductable is $5000 so I am not really going to bother with insurance.

That's a good machine. Go for it.

I'm 4-months into "treatment".......and my M-Series Auto is doing great. I think you'll like it. I've reduced my AHI to an average of about 0.5 with pressure setting of 9-12.

Whatever you, please don't fail to purchase the software and a card reader to go with it. Being able to see what you are doing every night makes ALL the difference. You can tweak and tune the machine so that you get the absolute best results with minimal pressure.

For a mask, I can highly recommend a Comfortlite 2 with nasal pillows....lubed with lanolin.....and modified with garbage can ties by Oldgearhead. (That sounds horrible....but the mod by Oldgearhead makes a really good mask EXCELLENT.)

You'll learn as you go.....with help from fellow hoseheads on this forum. Welcome!.

Forgot something.....Be sure and download a copy of James R. Skinner's "Encore Pro Analyzer" to go with the software you purchase from Cpap.com.

Skinner is a fellow hosehead....and his software is first rate. There is another similar piece of software, but it's outdated.......and has not been properly revised to fit the newest versions of the M-Series software. It's not nearly as good as Skinner's.

If you like Skinner's work as I did, send him a few bucks as a token of your appreciation.

Since you are going cash with that big deductable, I think you are wise to go on the high end side APAP which really is only slightly more expensive. Saves on retitration and makes tweaking much easier or non-existant.

You don't mention your pressure. Did the Doc tell you? Just in case you are really high and might want to consider BiPAP Auto.

But if you are 14 or 15 or less you should do quite will with Auto CPAP.

Good luck.

No he didnt tell me a pressure. I havent gone for my second sleep study where I try out the cpap. I thought that is when the pressure is determined. Am I wrong?

Jack,

I had my appt. too on the 30th but after the study on the 5th (I had the cpap put on me for 5 hours) I wanted the machine right then! I called and had my appt. moved up two weeks - you might try that if they can get you in.

My results were quite bad - 88 non breathing events > 10 seconds per hour (which to me seems almost impossible) so I respect your crap diagnosis and (used to) feel your pain.

Jackr......Don't worry about the login....it's so "clunky" that I simply gave up trying to make it work smoothly.

You can download James Skinner's software at the following site:

http://james.istop.com/encoreproanalyzer/

When you purchase factory software to go with your machine, be sure it is Encore Pro 1.6i or later with card reader to go with it.

Don't bother obtaining or installing MyEncore....it's the software that's out of date.

Encore Pro Analyzer is the software by jskinner......and it's good stuff!

Finally....your upcoming "titration experience" may leave you discouraged. When I had mine, the quality of the experience was really crappy. All you need though, is the script from the doctor that will allow you to purchase from cpap.com. Once you have the script, you can manage your own treatment. Because of the way you are bypassing insurance....and all the stupid complexities associated with that system....you are headed in the correct direction.

Knowledge is the key to the whole thing.....and you are soaking that up on this forum.

You'll do just fine!

Thanks Gerald. I am not expecting a miracle (although I am hoping for one)

That link did not work. I looked around his site but found nothing.
