Airsense 10 suddenly shut down

The OSCAR graphs from last Friday: pressure restarted at 7.8. Oddly the panel on the left which says "Ramp Pressure 8.0" is wrong.

What it shows in the graphs just doesn't go with the settings unless you change something in the settings at some point.

I set it to 7.8 as suggested by Dog Slobber earlier in the thread. I did it on my old machine before I sent it back, then did it on the new machine when setting it up.

Okay. That likely explains it.
Probably was set to 8.0 and then you changed it to 7.8 but on the statistics side OSCAR couldn't decide what to report as minimum setting so it just showed the first setting before the change.

When there are 2 different pressure settings within a 24 hour period OSCAR doesn't always report the last setting.

Well I set it up 9 days ago and haven't changed it since. Doesn't matter, I am not sure why Dog Slobber wanted me to do that, something about detecting a power cycle.

You see the settings that OSCAR shows...8 to 20. I don't understand why it doesn't say 7.8 to 20.

Plus it says autoramp is on and set to start at 8.

I know little about Oscar. My settings are minimum 8, max 20, start pressure 7.8 and auto ramp. That was Dog Slobber's suggestion I believe.

Okay. Never mind. I was looking at the 7.8 wrong on the screen shot. I thought it was 7.8 for minimum and instead it is 7.8 for the autoramp.

I think you're seeing straight. It says Ramp Pressure 8, and it should say 7.8 I believe.

Yes, it was me who suggested you turn on AutoRamp and set the ramp pressure to a value slightly less than your minimum pressure (7.8 ).

This was so we could determine decisively that a power cycle was occuring.

While we suspected a power cycle has been occuring, and at the beginning of the thread, when I made the suggestion we still weren't sure.

At 6:30 your machine was blowing 7.8. The *only* way that it can be at 7.8 is if it's in ramp mode, and on a ResMed the only way it can be in ramp is if it has just been powered on.

We now know absolutely that your machine is being power cycled. Now we just need to know why.

The odds of two different machines, your original and then your spare, having power issues within them, is too remote. The problem is external to them. The ResMed you sent in for repair is going to check out just fine.

Consider:

• Setting your ramp to Auto and Ramp Pressure to 7.8 (or ramp 8.0 and min pressure to 8.2). This is *not* for therapy reason but to determine if your machine is having power cycles. You won't notice the the 0.2 difference in pressure, but a pressure of 7.8 will show up on your graphs and the only explanation is a power cycle. AutoRamp does a good job of detecting sleep and switching to therapy mode, and if it doesn't detect sleep, it will also switch to therapy mode should it detect events.

Thought I'd check back in for anyone following this saga. Heard back from cpap.com, they said

"Your repaired machine has been received from the manufacturer. The manufacturer replaced the blower motor and found in the usage data that high leaks and repeated mask events were detected by the machine. The auto off feature may be causing the machine to shut down during therapy."

I don't recall seeing these events in the graphs I posted in this thread, nor do I understand why they would replace the blower motor if the power was going out or if the "auto off feature" was causing it. I think this is basically a "shrug" response.

What is the auto off feature and is there a way to disable it?

How do you see "mask events" in OSCAR?

Looking at the data I see no more power off events since I switched surge suppressors, other than one where I was laying there and realized I had not put my occlusal guard in and had to get up and get it, and another time I woke up at 2:30 AM with bad heartburn and had to get up and take some Tums. I strongly suspect the old surge suppressor was to blame for this whole thing.

Mask events...starting and stopping of the machine. Breaks in the therapy pressure and recording line.

Auto off is part of the SmartStart feature on the AirSense 10 models. If it is enabled (turned on) then the machine will start blowing without your pushing the ON button once you take a couple of breaths and when it no longer detects your breathing for some reason or another and one of those reasons is a very big leak that lasts a while.

So SmartStart is for both auto on and auto off. Now the new AirSense 11 models have this feature broken down separately.

So they replaced the blower motor and still wanted to blame you....hmmmm....I don't buy it.

I haven't seen all your reports but of the 2 shared here only the July 29 had any large leak that could even remotely cause it to shut the machine off and that was around 6:45 to 7:00 and around 8:00 and if you look at the pressure graph...it never shut itself off for those leaks. It got up to a little less than 40 L/min leak...and that's really not large enough to cause the auto off machine to shut off anyway. I have seen 50 L/min leak line and the machine never shuts off and I have SmartStart turned on.

I think you are being fed a line of BS and they want to blame you for a problem with the machine and I don't see it being your fault despite what they say.

BTW....you were having the problem even with SmartStart turned OFF so even if you did have some really big leaks they wouldn't cause the machine to shut off when SmartStart is OFF.
I am rolling my eyeballs really big here.... When all else fails and you don't want to admit to mechanical or computer sensor problem.......blame the patient.

Yeah I've had SmartStart off for years since an incident where no data was written to the card and I was advised turning it off could prevent that glitch.

Well it just happened again. Early this morning I woke up to no air to find the machine dead and unresponsive. Unplugging and plugging the power cord into the back of the machine several times did nothing. Unplugging and plugging the power cord into the surge suppressor several times finally brought it back to life. Note this is the new APC surge suppressor, not the old Rocketfish one.

Either the machine is just defective or some kind of momentary brownout condition is messing with it. The lamp, clock and power alarm plugged into the power strip as usual were not affected in any way by this incident. I turned off the power strip for a moment to test it and the power alarm came on as expected so there was no power outage long enough to trip it.

This was a machine I bought in Nov 2020 so no longer in warranty, so I can't send it back again. Not that they fixed it last time anyway.
