After first year's results

Post by kvck » Wed Mar 16, 2022 3:04 am

Hi everyone,

It has been one year I am using my APAP and today received my full year report.

I wonder if you can comment whether I can stop using my APAP or not.

My understanding is that the pressure is low enough (?) for me stop using it but I am pretty novice on commenting this matter.

Will be glad to hear your comments.

Haven't really read it yet, but 1) you should never stop using Cpap without a new sleep study, and 2) your numbers are low because you're on cpap... stop using it and they'll go right back up again!

It's like wearing glasses - take them off and you can't read a thing!

Your understanding is incorrect.
Just because you don't need higher pressures to hold your airway open doesn't mean that without cpap you wouldn't be having the same apnea events if you didn't use cpap.

All this nice report means is your OSA is being well treated WHILE using cpap. It does NOT mean that without cpap you wouldn't need the cpap.

You should keep using the machine until you have a sleep study done without cpap, fixing your problem, to see if you still have the problem you had that earned you this machine.

I understood the relation now. I thought lower figures mean less need but this is not correct.

I'd better have another sleep study then.

Thanks for the replies.

Nice report! You should be proud of that.

We don't say, "My exercise has been so good that I no longer have to worry about being active."

We don't say, "I've been eating so healthy that I can now ignore what I eat."

Likewise, we don't say, "My sleep-breathing has been so well treated by my PAP therapy that I can now stop doing what I have been doing to get the best sleep possible."

That maximum of 6.8 is a significant amount of pressure that you needed at some point, right? Be happy your machine was there and able to deliver it, and continue down the exemplary road of success that you are on!

Thanks for sharing your story. May it continue to be a good one. I wish you all the best with it.

You will need to stop the CPAP usage for at least for a week prior to new testing.
There is a washout period needed for accurate testing for CPAP users.

Multiple papers suggest a "carryover effect". A speculation is that tissues heal from respiratory vibration damage when supported by CPAP pressure.

Very interesting. I will keep it in my mind for the next test.

I am unable to sleep without cpap.
Any suggestion that I stop cpap for as much as ONE night will be resisted
MOST STRENUOUSLY.

I consider that "study" to be bulldonkers. Some keywords -
the intensity and duration of this effect remains unclear

it seems reasonable

Who would think the tissues return to a damaged state after 7 days without CPAP? If they do, your bed partner will be able to tell you that you snored like a horse the nights you didn't use CPAP - no need for a study, start back with the CPAP.

During the wash out period, if you start feeling like crap, crank up the CPAP and cancel the study. No use wasting your time and money.

I still wouldn't "ignore." A little attention might still be due in order to make sure utensils and table coverings and wait staff remain unharmed for the duration.
