Without a germanium crystal, it's next to impossible.
WWI soldiers used a safety razor blade and a pencil to receive AM radio transmissions. Google "foxhole radio"

And in 'Nam, they used a slinky for an antenna.
I wore orthodontic braces for 2.5 years, and never heard a note.

The graphite particle would simulate the electrical properties of germanium.
Carbon and germanium are similar at the atomic level.
I would not be surprised if the DOD had a "McGyver" lab
dedicated to developing field hacks--they probably still do.
It would make a fascinating book.

Used to live near a radio tower. Was hard to have a phone conversation because the radio played through the landline phone.

One of the microphones over the choir would pick up a local radio station and feed it into the church sound system. We finally figured out what was causing the problem and shortened the microphone cable.
