No Symptoms at All....Listen to the Experts

Post by scf » Tue Sep 21, 2021 12:57 pm

I hope this is not an irrelevant. I wanted to share because there may be new people out there like me who have no symptoms at all and will not get a sleep study. My doctor ordered one because of atrial fibrillation and a high percentage of people with a fib have sleep apnea. I procrastinated on scheduling the study because I had no symptoms...no snoring, no day time sleepiness, never ever took naps, no jerking awake out of breath, no brain fog. I did have fatigue that I attributed to the a fib.

At the initial sleep center appointment I answered negatives to all but one of the 35 questions used to evaluate the likelihood of sleep apnea. After my HOME sleep study I was stunned to learn I had moderate sleep apnea. The Advanced Practice Nurse admitted being surprised. So listen to your health care provider and the experts. I thank God that my physician ordered this for me and I am equally grateful that I had it done despite my certainty that I did not have it.

Thank you for sharing this, scf. I'm already thinking of one friend with afib to whom I might suggest a sleep study. If anyone wants to geek out on the AF/OSA correlations, here's an interesting journal article:

AFIB and apnea are so closely related, I am surprised any doctor
would not order a sleep study for every AFIB patient--just to avoid liability.
And LAW$UITS!!!
