Attention Okies

Post by JeffH » Thu Jan 11, 2007 12:55 pm

Ice storm coming. Get your battery charged up or your generator in good working order and plenty of gas. The noon news today said 1" to 2" of freezing rain.

In 2000 we were out of electricity for eight days due to an ice storm...it ain't fun.

National Weather Service just issued an Ice Storm Warning for 1/2" to 1 1/2" of ice. Looks like it's gonna be a bad one.

Living in Oklahoma, we take our weather serious around here....LOL

Thanks for the warning. That will probably impact S. Arkansas too.

Got my battery and Walmart inverter. We were without power for 17 days that last time, but that was pre-cpap days.

We are 27 miles from the rural electric company, so we are at the very end of the line when it comes to repairs. 3.5 miles from "town", but it isn't the town the electric comes from.

Hope it misses you, Linda.

Best go get a deep cycle marine battery and an inverter if you want to sleep thru a power outage. Believe me, it isn't fun.

Good Luck there folks. Having been through more than my share of ice storms I know it's not very fun.

Stay in touch and let us know how you're doing!

Typical pre-storm weather. I'm sitting here with the windows open and wearing shorts. Temps in the high 60's today, and windy as hell.

Come noon tomorrow...look out!

Considering your avatar, here's a funny story for you regarding one of the last nasty storms I went through.

This was early 90's or so. A whole bunch of us had literally gone Truckin' Up To Buffalo to go catch the Dead playing at Rich Stadium. We had a great time. Most of us had been Dead fans for a while already at that point.

Later that same year, the same group got together at this house on the edge of town for a little gathering. 8 of us at this house, along with 4 dogs and 2 cats.
One of the worst winter storms ever in Georgia hits and we are all trapped in this little house with no power and essentially no food for 4 days. All of us. And the pets. Now you know a group of deadheads can be a pretty interesting bunch on a good day, but picture us after several days of trying to cook canned green beans on a grill in 15 degree weather after having not showered in days.

It was, to say the least, a VERY memorable occasion!

I'll certainly never go through another storm warning without being at least mildly prepared, no matter where I live! Heh.

Just to mention, using a inverter wastes 20 to 30 % of your battery power. It's better to use the 12 volt battery, with the correct cable to power the XPAP directly. Jim

Last time the ice knocked all the power out we sat here on the ridge not knowing that nobody had any power until we watched the news, one of the advantages of living on alternative power! Got the generator running to make sure that the batteries are full, we shall survive! Have fun, Charlie

GF just got back from Wal-mart. They were completely out of "D" batteries. Folks are taking this one seriously!

Aww the lovely sound of waking up to a cold day and hearing the ice pelting the skylight...

Then the 'ugh' feeling of damn now I have to get ready for work and go de-ice the damn car...
