ANYONE EXPERIENCE THIS WITH USE OF HUMIDIFIER

Post by tbrown1 » Thu Jan 11, 2007 10:46 am

I finally got my Res Med S8 from my very competent friends at Apria - whole other story. The first night I used it I woke up the next morning and had alot of excess mucus ( nose & throat) after I got it all out I felt SO GOOD! I was using a loaner from the doctors office at first - no humidifier and would always wake up with a stuffy nose and tight chest sore ribs/lungs. I love the humidifier!

I absolutely love my humidifier too. Before I used cpap, i'd get nasty colds every time the furnace turned on due to dry air in the house irritating my nasal passages. If I ever found out that I didn't need cpap anymore, I'd be frantic to find a way to still get that level of humidification into my nose.

I have noticed a change in the frequency of sore throats and colds. Usually I get at least one bad fall head/throat cold and one just before Christmas. I haven't had anything since going on CPAP late last summer. I'm thinking it is one of the following:

*Since CPAP, better rested and immunity is improved.
*Humidity added during heating season keeps throat moist and mucus protects more against viruses
*Maybe the two filters (Respironics APAP M) filters out irritating dust or other air-borne irritants.

Other opinions?

I started on xPAP therapy w/a heated humidifier so didn't know any different - until it was decided to put me on a loaner auto pap for 2 weeks. The DME said they didn't have a loaner humidifier and sent me on my merry way w/no humidifier. ABSOLUTE DISASTER. My sleep lab was able to come up w/a passover humidifier which helpd A LITTLE. Then a wonderful PAPper loaned me his extra HC 100 stand alone heated humidifier. ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD! I'd never have made it on the auto w/o that heated humidifier. I guess there are those who do okay w/o a humidifier and I've read those who don't like a heated humidifier but use a humidifier w/o heat. I sure am NOT one. I HAVE to have a heated humidifier or I get drier than a burnt boot and wake up during the night w/my tongue like sandpaper, scratchy throat, painful nasal passages and sinuses to say nothing of caked lips.

Apart from all the obvious good reasons to use a H/H - I find they are a neccesary noise baffle

The air noise without a H/H in the circuit is so much worse.

Hmm..... I've only been on bi-pap a couple of nights. My provider told me not to use the humidifier for a few days to see if it was necessary. From what I'm reading here; I should use it,not only for comfort but to keep from getting sick. I'll try it out tonight and see if I'm all snotty in the morning.

I couldn't even function without my H/H. Even in humid areas I still need it.

Hi, all
I started out 2 years ago with a passover humidifier, and have stopped using it, with no problem at all. I do not have any sinus problems.
Maybe in the future I will need it, but now I seem to be doing fine without it.
