Oscar Install Problem

Post by rkl122 » Wed Jul 14, 2021 2:54 pm

Hello all. Long time since I've been here. I've just gone through the installation procedure for Oscar 1.2. It duly created the data directory, which in my system, was created by the install (with direction from me) as F:\My Documents\OSCAR_Data. But it's giving me "Unable to write to Oscar data directory..." Error code 5 Access is denied. This happens even when executing Oscar as administrator. It looks as if Oscar successfully transferred my SleepyHead data to the Oscar data directory, and the security tab doesn't show any "write denial" to any user.

I'm guessing this is a simple issue, but a quick forum search doesn't bring it up. Would appreciate a little help.

Thanks, Ron

EDIT - A more careful search shows that someone else had this problem and it was due to a virus scanner. I excluded Oscar from Avast, and it appears that all is well. Many thanks to you programmers for this advancement to SH. Much appreciated!

EDIT2 - The problem reoccurred when I reversed the permission change I had made before fiddling with the AV exceptions, and went away when I changed it back, so I'm not sure now whether it's a permission issue or antivirus issue (or both). Will report back if I narrow it down, but for now, Oscar lives!

Error code 5 means that permission was denied when OSCAR tried to write to your data directory. But who denied permission? Could be an anti-virus tool, some other kind of system protection tool, permission settings in the file system for the My Documents folder, or who knows what. But it's not OSCAR -- OSCAR doesn't mess with permission settings. OSCAR is just the poor victim of banging its head against a locked door.
