Started humidification and slight rise in AHI. Related?

Post by CPAPinCAL » Sat May 01, 2021 3:46 pm

As always, thanks for all of the advice here. I have finally de-lurked.

After 5 years, at the advice of my doctor, I began using a humidifier. My sinuses have thanked me in the past 10 days, but I have noticed a slight increase in my nightly AHI, from an average of around 1 for the last five years to 1.5 in the last 10 days. I seem to be having one or two extra CAs per night that based on the flow seem arousal related. I know these are still very good numbers and by no means am I complaining, but I am curious is there is a cause and effect relationship here or the current numbers are an outlier?

I have a ResMed Airsense 10 with humidification set at 4.

Some people turn the humidifier up to a setting that causes nasal congestion. This might cause an AHI increase. Otherwise, your case appears to be statistically insignificant.

Insignificant increase in AHI. If you went from 1 to 5, I might be concerned. I don't see any relationship to the humidity.

Youve been on CPAP therapy about 5 years. Thats about the time line for a new machine?

Are you on a new machine?
Were there any changes to yiur settings other than hunidity?
Di yiu have any before/after graphs?
When you do a monthly OSCAR graph is the last month clearly well above the previous 11 months AHI?
Why were you meeting with your sleep doctor?

I am on machine #2 from last August. I was never a fan of humidified air... until over time it irritated the hell out of my nose and sinuses, and I didn't put 2+2 together for a while. I am not very bright. On the upside, my sinuses don't sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies the first hour of the morning now. The monthly is up a little, again, a problem most people would love to have. From .8 per night to 1.2 now. And I was meeting with the sleep doctor because we hadn't had an appointment since 2017. :)
