I keep waking up ~1hr after falling asleep, any tips? indications from these OSCAR charts?

Post by johnnyt » Mon Apr 19, 2021 8:21 pm

Hello, I've been struggling to adjust to apap for a year now trying to treat possible UARS, I go through waves for motivation of trying to adjust then get frustrated that I can't stay asleep and then try again a week later. My problem is that for the life of me i can't stay asleep longer than 1 hour. When I do manage to fall asleep for even 1 hour I do wake up feeling better. I don't want to spend the rest of my life unsuccessfully trying to get used to it, and I'm not giving up. I can't talk to a doctor because they've given up on me saying it's all in my head, despite waking up unrested day after day frequently with headaches.

Happy to hear any suggestions, theories, hunches.

I've attached a few of my OSCAR charts, you can probably see right before it ends, the pressure ramps up I think that's causing me to wake? I recently bought a cervical collar learning that maybe my mouth is opening when REM hits, but that's just a thought.

Machine: AirCurve 10 ASV
MAsk: Airfit F30i (previously tried the P10 nasals, airfit f20, airtouch f20)

Thanks in advance for any help

I had somewhat of a similar ordeal so I can relate. However, I think you're giving up too easily. Waiting a week to try again is far too long. Try again that same night or at the latest the next night. You need to keep at it. Some of us take a long time to get used to cpap and/or wearing a mask. You also need to determine what is waking you up. Is it the noise of the mask, the machine, or something else.

your machine does not record any events. Have you been tested ? or how do you know you have apnea problems ?

I find it very hard to fall asleep again if I wake the same night but I'll put more effort into doing that, and trying it every night.

That's the thing, I can't figure out what is waking me, I wear earplugs so it's not noise related, mask doesn't leak from what I can see on the charts, no events recorded, although sometimes I sense my body twitch that wakes me.

I had a very basic take home test in which I slept horribly for a few hours and from that the doctors said it wasn't apnea and would not talk to me further. I can feel my nasal passages narrow lying down and still narrow when I wake up. I suspect my problems are relate to poor sleeping so I'm trying to adjust to the machine to see if it helps any.

. . . I can feel my nasal passages narrow . . .
Get some Breathe Right strips.
Wear one while using the cpap.

Sleep cycles generally last about 90 minutes. We all 'wake' between sleep cycles...most of the time the 'wake state' is quite short and we have no recollection.
When I started CPAP I had recollection of waking between cycles 2,3 and 4.
A year and a half later I generally have recollection of waking between cycles 3 and 4.

I'll give those another try, although when I originally tried them I felt like the blockage was too far in my nasal passage to make any different.
