using an extension cord with your cpap machine
hello I was just wondering is it bad to use an extension cord with my cpap machine. what will happen will the machine get damaged. from using an extension cord?
Re: using an extension cord with your cpap machine
Whenever we have traveled I have carried an extension cord. In hotel rooms the outlets are never in the right place and an extension is necessary. I don't know of any problems using an extension.

I always use a power center with a short, heavy cord.
I make sure the load rating for the interface is several times that of all devices which will be used.

I have used one for years whenever I travel. Just use a good thick one that doesn't rob power to your machine.

The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet is rated at 53 watts typical power consumption and 104 watts peak power consumption. Cheap, commercial extension cords (#18 wire gauge) are rated to handle 600 watts.Sheriff Buford wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 8:08 amJust use a good thick one that doesn't rob power to your machine.

Many of those cheap cords are imported.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:30 amThe ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet is rated at 53 watts typical power consumption and 104 watts peak power consumption. Mislabeling is not as uncommon as you might think.
I go for as short and fat a cord as possible--covering my hiney the best way possible.
I have seen long cords fry in use--it is scary.

Xenophobes should check every extension cord, appliance, light fixture, thin extension cord, short fat extension cord, power strip and lamp in their home. Most of these were imported. $1.3 billion dollars of microwave ovens alone were imported in 2019. Almost all of these were from China.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 11:16 amMany of those cheap cords are imported.

And, get rid of that Chinese cellphone before it fries a hiney scarily.

Not a xenophobe, but realistic about shabby consumer products.
I would buy a European cell phone if I could get one . . .

Re: using an extension cord with your cpap machine
Whyever would you think an extension cord would damage a cpap? how could it damage a cpap? I mean, if you wrapped the cpap so tightly in an extension cord that it couldn't get any air, that would damage it over time.springman946 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 13, 2021 8:54 pmhello I was just wondering is it bad to use an extension cord with my cpap machine. what will happen will the machine get damaged. from using an extension cord?

Re: using an extension cord with your cpap machine
The only time you have to really worry about the gauge and length is when running a something that takes a lot of power such as a power saw or microwave. This takes such a small amount of energy you will be fine. Especially since it converts into DC.You start to notice power loss after more than 25 feet with tools, you will be fine with a 6-10' cheap cord.
Re: using an extension cord with your cpap machine
Am I the only one bugged by those new-fangled extension cords with the flat plugs? There is a grounded plug at a 45 degree angle to the cord. These drive me nuts in hotels where it's hard to find an outlet that I can plug in at that angle because of the placement of the outlet or other things may be plugged in below or around it.
A regular grounded plug that sticks out a few inches is no picnic either, but I can usually find a spot. Sometimes that flat angled plug is impossible to place.

Well, the simple answer is "Don't buy one".Janknitz wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 8:28 pmAm I the only one bugged by those new-fangled extension cords with the flat plugs? However, when you *do* want one, they're *GREAT*, they don't block the other outlet, no matter which orientation it's in, they fit behind furniture where you'd have trouble plugging in a regular plug, etc.
