Does Resmed Aircurve 10 S measure minimums?
Does Resmed Aircurve 10 S measure minimums?
So I just recently started using Oscar and I'm looking at my records for the first time. I'm noticing that when I switched from my S9 bipap machine to my Aircurve bipap, that Oscar started displaying minimums for tidal volume, respiratory rate, minute vent, leak rate, etc as zero. I regularly tinker with my Ti max and min as well as with my trigger and cycle sensitivity. Increasing my Ti max and min made my AHI plummet. Increasing the trigger sensitivity also made a big difference. I still haven't gotten a handle on where to set my cycle sensitivity. I think it's been on medium for the past several months. Could bumping the cycle sensitivity up possibly result in non-zero minimums? My logic for making the cycle less sensitive is that it would prevent the machine from cycling to epap until I was really obviously done inhaling. Could a lower cycle sensitivity effectively cause me to hold my breath when I should be exhaling? All I know is that I got markedly better sleep about a year ago when I started playing with those settings. For those records, Oscar shows that I had non-zero minimums. Meanwhile, my AHI has stayed consistently low since adjusting those settings, including almost completely eliminating my central apnea. Note that I haven't changed my prescribed pressures during this time period.
I know that's a lot of information and it's probably not as organized as it could be. But I'm sleepy so... yeah, if anybody has any useful suggestions, I'm all ears.

I know nothing about the questions OP is asking about those special settings.
Palerider does...but he is still having problems staying on the forum.

Well, let's see if they fixed things, (or I get lucky) and I can post...
Post an example, It may just be something that's not reported, or it may be a bug. What version of Oscar are you using?dfunk wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:57 pmSo I just recently started using Oscar and I'm looking at my records for the first time. Generally a bad idea, especially TiMin. Changing any of those without knowing WHY you're changing them, I recommend against.
Low cycle, and higher TiMin can cause you to hold your breath, by maintaining IPAP for longer than your body wants, the only reason that those settings are there are for people with lung diseases, (which sleep apnea absolutely isn't).

Oh wow, I totally missed any replies to this. I'm so sorry! I'll Post more info shortly. Thanks for getting back to me!
Re: Does Resmed Aircurve 10 S measure minimums?
Ok, first of all, here's what I mean about the minimums starting to show as zero. I don't know why there's data missing in all those places. I don't know if my doc messed up my SD card in my old machine. But that period in Jan/Feb of 2020 is when I started exploring my ti min/max cycle/trigger sensitivity settings on my machine. And then June of 2020 is when I switched to my new machine and the minimums just started displaying as zero. (Also of note, I've been using Bi-pap since early 2014. I don't know why my old SD card only shows data from early 2019.)

Re: Does Resmed Aircurve 10 S measure minimums?
Next, playing with those settings. The timeline of changes in my prescribed pressure and also touching those settings, should explain why I've been messing with them.
2014-mid 2019- bi-pap therapy at 12/8 worked great for a good while but eventually started to fail and I spent a lot of the time extremely tired. My AHI skyrocketed.
6/17/2019- failed sleep study. Just couldn't fall asleep in the lab. Continued to feel worse.
8/13/2019- sleep study, prescribed new pressure of 22/18, which helped some. Also started playing with different masks at this time, went back to full face eventually, which also helped.
10/14/2019- sinus surgery, helped significantly after recovery.
12/29/2019- sleep study, prescribed new pressure of 19/15.
1/15/2020- started experimenting with ti and cycle/trigger settings. Instant improvement in AHI. Virtually zero central apnea. Increasing ti max seems to have the greatest effect on AHI and how I feel. I'm a professional singer and I breathe very slowly. Big singer lungs to fill. Maxing out the trigger sensitivity also seems to make a big difference, reducing the time I spend bottomed out with my lungs completely empty. When I asked my doctor about these settings, he said to feel free to mess with them because they shouldn't make much difference. A lower ti max makes me feel like I'm suffocating and hyperventilating while I'm trying to fall asleep.
June-July 2020- started using Bleep cpap mask. Took a long time to adjust to the mask, especially figuring out how best to keep my mouth sealed shut while I sleep. (You name it, I've tried it. Leakage is still a constant struggle.) My current solution isn't perfect, but pretty ok.
Over the course of the latter part of last year I just kept feeling worse and worse again, even though my AHI has stayed pretty low. At the beginning of this year, I've started playing more with my ti min and cycle sensitivity settings. While at first it made the most sense to me to set it low enough so I could breathe at my own pace (including if my body wanted me to breathe more shallowly), doing so just left me waking up feeling even worse than before. A combination of a lower cycle sensitivity and a relatively high ti min seems to keep me waking up feeling about as well as I can. But it's clear from looking at oscar that my minimum inspiration time is artificially boosted.
Also, I've been using an actigraphy with my smartwatch called "Sleep as Android" and it says that the amount I wake up in the middle of the night varies wildly, as does the amount of deep sleep I get and how continuous those deep sleep periods are. Though my current settings seem to keep them as consistently improved as they've ever been. That said, I don't know how accurate it is. This is a consumer-grade product.
Lastly, at the beginning of February, I've started sleeping with a pulse oximeter. I've noticed that a lower cycle sensitivity and a higher ti min prevents me from severe SpO2 drops.
Not sure which info in an overview would be most useful to support the above, but here's my best guess.

And here's what last night looked like.
Re: Does Resmed Aircurve 10 S measure minimums?
You are all over the place, try to focus on one problem at a timer. The last set of graphs look like normal scar graphs to me, don't know what you did to make the older ones look that way. what did you change? Lets focus on one issue at a time please and not use a shotgun approach trying to fix everything you think is wrong at once.

Re: Does Resmed Aircurve 10 S measure minimums?
I don't know what you're talking about. The 3 images I posted above were all from last night. The ones above that are from the OSCAR overview window, tracking my progress over time.
As far as what is wrong, I mean, I'm tired (and I have dizzy spells when I try to exercise). By leaving my pressures where they were prescribed at my most recent sleep study and experimenting with my ti min, ti max, cycle sensitivity, and and trigger sensitivity over the course of the past year, I've drastically improved my AHI and blood oxygenation over what they were with the settings at default, but I'm still just tired. Current settings:
bipap pressures: 18/15
Trigger: very high
Cycle: very low
ti min: 1.8 seconds
ti max: 3 seconds

Sorry, I missed that the top graphs were from the overview.
