macOS Big Sur does not like Sleepyhead

Post by The_Boaphile » Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:18 pm

My Mac just updated to macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 and now it doesn't trust Sleepyhead any more.

;-(

I really dislike computers when software developers just slam you with these updates without regard for how that may impact what you use your computer for.

Speaking as a software developer (LOL), you need to put blame where blame belongs, which is the product manager that decided this was the way to do things. Apple *loves* to force upgrade paths. I think you realize this, but it is mac OS that is rejecting SleepyHead, not the other way around.

The people that control mac OS decided it was better to have apps that are 'known' to them then to risk bad apps (malware, for instance). You can make arguments pro and con, but I prefer a system that at least allows the end-user to decide what level of risk they're OK with.

I did a quick search and found https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-hel ... h40616/mac, which might work for you. Zonker has the best answer unless there is some reason you think you have to stay with Sleepyhead....

We are agreed.

I 100% agree. Apple caused this and other issues with my computer with this "upgrade". It screwed up my Microsoft Excel which is an even larger issue for me. They have to know the changes they make will adversely impact other software. Before now upgrades just changed things on me. I'm not a fan of change. Lol This is the first time it ruined my ability to access spread sheets. For Pete's sake. A spread sheet? Almost nothing more simple and yet it screwed that up.

MacOS BigCrap is breaking things all over the place.

However,Sleephead is long dead and gone after it's creator had a very public meltdown and slaughtered the project.

Go with Oscar, which was forked from Sleepyhead and run by a bunch of good people who are trying to actually HELP the cpap community, not just inflate their own egos.

here's a VERY good example of what you're talking about, going on in another thread, from blue dragon-

"I'm sorry your providers have so unhelpful. Unfortunately, your experience is not uncommon.

Whether your machine is transmitting data (limited data via cell phone) is an independent issue of whether the machine is writing data to the SD card. The only way for a provider to determine that the SD card slot and SD card are working properly is to physically take your machine and test it. Mentioning OSCAR probably just gave them an easy out to dismiss you. :(

You need a bigger hammer. I recommend you install ResScan -- a ResMed software product that will read the SD card from your ResMed CPAP machine. You can get ResScan (version 5.9 recommended) on Apneaboard.com. Try importing the SD card into ResScan. If it fails, as I expect, then your complaint to your provider is that ResMed's own software product will not read data from your ResMed machine, which makes the problem fall squarely in the provider and ResMed's laps.

If by some freak chance ResScan works but OSCAR doesn't, then come back to us with that information. I truly do not expect that situation to arise, but if it does, we're the ones who will need to respond."

how about THAT for taking care of software?

  1. You should have updated to OSCAR a long time ago
  2. You would have gotten (or will get) the same message with OSCAR as you got with SleepyHead
  3. Depending on how tightly locked sown a Windows setup is, you would also have gotten a similar message. Both Apple and Microsoft are throwing up roadblocks to prevent people from easily running apps that didn't come from their App Store (or coming from a trusted source by being signed).
  4. Big Sur wasn't forced on you. Big Sur has beed offered to me for months, I declined the update and configured my Mac to NOT install updates automatically
  5. You can run/install an untrusted/unsigned app by CONTROL-Clicking then selecting Open. You only need to do this once.

Blue Dragon is absolutely terrific.

He is the biggest asset on the OSCAR team.

i wouldn't go that far. i'm agnostic, myself.

i have 2 chromebooks, 1 win 10 laptop (using that now), an android tablet, an i-pad mini and an i-phone.

each has it's own use. though, tbh, if someone would produce a 7" android tablet, i'd prolly let the i-pad mini go.

but the i-pad serves it's purpose.

it is what it is.

I bought a ipad air in a moment of wooly foolishness--hated every moment I used it.
But now you can't pry it away from our 11YO grandson.

I have run both Mac and PC for years. Mac at home, PC at work. And I will tell you, windows has its own set of problems. Like the ridiculous amount of bloat-Ware that comes on your computer, much of it that cannot be deleted. For home computing, I find my Mac to be extremely reliable, and drama-free. Neither one is really better. It’s just a matter of choice. Chevy versus Ford kind of thing.

On another note, I just upgraded to Big Sur, and I’m finding I have zero problems with Oscar.

Following the instructions at the link you provided, I tried to find Sleepyhead in my "Applications", but it was not there. I am not sure why it wouldn't be there unless Big Sur just was not allowing it to show.

So I looked here on the cpaptalk.com site for the OSCAR information.

I went to the OSCAR site. Downloaded the application for macOS and attempted an install after the download. I double clicked the OSCAR logo and, I got the same screen that says, "No way will let you install what you want our product". So instead I tried right clicking to see if it gave me a different option. The same "No way pal" screen popped up, with one additional option. That same warning image with the one additional "OPEN" button. I clicked OPEN and it worked.

The image I uploaded is the first one I got. I didn't take a pic of the second one, but it was identical with a "OPEN" button right above the "Eject Disc Image" button shown on this image.

Thank you!
