Air Pressure

Post by JCriniti1977 » Wed Feb 24, 2021 9:36 am

Hi there my name is Jeremy. I added my machine and location to my profile but I don't see it when I view it. I did it twice and I don't understand why. I use the Phillips Dreamstation and I just got it in November. I was recently reading an article about how if your air pressure is too high you can get central sleep apnea from it or even high heart rate and a heart attack. Well I have been on CPAP and never had my pressure changed.I have obstructive sleep apnea. I weighed about 293 lbs in 2014 when I got put on CPAP. At one point I lost weight and was done to 248 in 2017and was still using the same air pressure because no one told me I needed to change it. I now weigh 267 and my machine is telling me my AHI is around 2% which is good and my periodic breathing is around .01. Does that periodic breathing number mean I don't have central sleep apnea? I got real upset last night thinking about all of this. I had high heart rate in 2019 but it went away and in the past when I was dehydrated it was high and drinking water made it go back to normal so I don't think it was related to my air pressure but I worry that when I lost all that weight could the higher pressure have hurt me? Also is it true that the Philips Dreamstation automatically changes your pressure as it sees fit? Sorry for all the questions but I also wanted to ask can my doctor figure out where my pressure should be based on how much weight I am losing? I can't go through a sleep study again and I am not sure if the at home one can diagnose obstructive sleep apnea so it might be a waste to even do it. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum
The equipment profile link is broken right now. No one's equipment profile is showing up.

Which model DreamStation do you have? If you don't know look on the bottom of the blower unit for a model number that begins with DSX and tell us the model number.

Periodic Breathing is just a waxing and waning of the air flow and unless you have a lot of it and it's chocked full of central/clear airway apneas you don't really need to worry about PB at all.

If your AHI on the LCD screen is just 2.0....you don't have a problem with central apnea.

Weight really has little bearing on pressure setting....A person weighing 150 may need a higher pressure than a person weighing 250.
