Cannot sleep with cpap after 5 months

Post by DavidTre » Sun Feb 14, 2021 4:49 am

Hi guys,

So I have been trying to sleep with CPAP for 5 months now. I started with a Resmed Airsense 10 Auto and a Resmed F30 full face mask.

The first week was great with many +4h night, but then it started bothering me a lot and I was removing it during my sleep.

Then I switched to the Resmed P10 nasal pillow and I started getting some sleep again, but struggling to hit the 4 hour mark since I remove the mask during my sleep.

Also, many times I wake up and feel like I cannot breathe properly through the mask and have to remove it. My nose gets easily clogged even when using a rinse before bed.

These are the pictures of a good night (5h with CPAP)

And pictures of what I usually get:

Thanks a lot in advance, I really do not know what to do anymore...

I'm no great reader of charts, and your AHI is actually pretty great, but - Min 5 Max 7.2? No wonder you can't breathe. That would suffocate a chihuahua. Open that sucker up a bit - try min 7 max 20.

True. Anything below 7.0, I have a problem. Yip, yip

A little more pressure might also blow through the nasal congestion.

Do you take any medications of any kind? If so, what?

Any other physical or mental health issues going on?

When you wake up .....any idea why?

Gosh yes, you would probably feel more comfortable if you raised you minimum to 7 so you could consistently take advantage of your EPR of 3. Do you know why your pressure range is so narrow? If it's important to your sleep to have a narrow range, you might reset the maximum to 8.

Is the P10 still comfortable? Do your leaks wake you up?

After the initial period of adjustment, discomfort is probably the number one reason people take off their masks in their sleep. The changes to your pressures may help with that. If your mask is uncomfortable, readjusting it or trying a new mask might be valuable.

People us all kinds of little tricks to keep themselves from removing the mask at night. You could wear socks on your hands, put a cap on your head with a tie that goes under your chin, or put tape over a strap so the pull on your skin will wake you up before you finish removing the mask.

I feel like there is too much air with anything over 7, and my 98% pressure was 5, but I will try again! Thanks for your answer!

The problem is not the AHI though, is that I constantly remove my mask and almost never get over 4h

Not taking any kind of meditation.

I just randomly wake up, lots of times I feel like the mask is impeding my breaking and I just remove it...

Other times I remove it even before waking up

I would say the mask itself is very comfortable, Ive tried a few nasal and full face masks and all of them bothered me. Never got any leaks.

I will try the tips for not removing the mask and raising the pressure, thanks a lot!

The thing that is weird to me, is that I wake up more often with CPAP that without, which feels I get even worse sleep although the AHI numbers are great

Did you have a sleep study? What was your AHI that night?

If you are fairly uncomfortable with pressures over 7, you can try setting your min = max = 7 (with EPR of 3) and see how that goes. You're really looking for comfort at this point; your numbers are good. I think once you feel more comfortable and can keep the mask on all night, you will start waking up less often and then start feeling better during the day. Keep us posted.

Only?

15 AHI means you woke up on average every four minutes.

You need to be talking to your doctor about your inability to sleep well. Maybe some short term help is needed.
If you can safely take an OTC sleep aid...might be worth trying.
Read the above blog. Lots of good information in it.

Yes, please get help.
If psychological help is suggested . . . , by all means, get it!.
You may need to change your behavior.
Taping the mask to your face may help keep it on, as it could wake you
when your bad self tries to take it off.
Getting a little hair under that tape may help even more.
