ReMed SmartStart Setting....UPDATE

Post by LSAT » Thu Jan 14, 2021 8:25 pm

Periodically I have seen postings where someone has commented that their SmartStart was not working. In most instances it has been a problem where it turned on but didn't turn off. I recently had that problem and I was aggravated because I keep my machine in a lower drawer of my nightstand. I wear a full face mask and I found that changing the mask setting from FF mask to pillows made the SmartStart start working properly. This change may make a slight change in the leak calculation. Hope this helps if you are having this problem.

Also, it doesn't work with a starting pressure of >8.0. I had a starting pressure of 8.0 and set it to 7.8 and it started working. This was with FFM (not sure if that makes a difference).

Sometimes with some masks and some pressure settings the auto on feature of SmartStart doesn't work so great.
Fairly common with some nasal pillow masks when starting pressure is on the low side.
This is the first time I have heard about it when someone is using a full face mask.

Also sometimes the auto off part of Smart Start doesn't always work so great with some masks. I have no problem with the auto on part with any mask but with the P10 mine doesn't work but with the Bleep it does work.

If it's the mask...check to make sure by removing the mask from the long hose and see if the machine does the auto off like it should.
If it doesn't then there's a sensor problem.

I don't know how to test the auto on feature to see if it is mask/pressure related or sensor related. Maybe just remove the mask and stick the end of the long hose in the mouth and breathe and see if the machine comes on like it should.

I get a bit nervous about potential sensor issues and want to rule them out because I feel if one sensor is bad then it might mean other sensors are maybe failing. So I want to rule out sensor issues.

This statement is incorrect.

SmartStart is more likely to *not* turn off when the mask pressure is very low.

Ok, let me restate - My smartstart wouldn't stop when set at 8.0. I set it to 7.8 and it worked fine!

My wife breathes pretty shallowly. While that doesn't turn the machine off, it sometimes won't get it started. I have to remind her either take a few deep breaths after putting her mask on, or press the start button.

I quite accept that it didn't work for you, but my pressures are in the 12+ range and it *always* works fine. SmartStart works fine at higher pressures, it has the most problem with auto-off with pillows, and low pressure.

UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL POST...............

I had thought I had a solution to my Smart Start problem where the machine would not automatically shut off. My solution worked for about 10 days and then it stopped turning off again. I called my DME (She's terrific) and she said she would send it in for me. It took 2+ weeks and ResMed replaced my machine. I couldn't believe it. Aside from the Smart Start, the unit had worked perfectly.

If you need a backup machine until you get your original machine back, there's a guy here who sells them. Inexpensive, low run-hours, good reputation.

I'll get his name and you can shoot him a PM.

My pressure is set at 4 & I use a nasal mask. The smart start always worked then suddenly in the last month I've found when I come up of a night-time it has been running for long enough to dry out the tank & leave it red hot.

It sounds like your machine is not putting enough air flow for the machine to detect you have removed the mask. Four is a very low pressure ( the lowest the machine will produce when operating normally). It is red hot because it has been running all day without having water in the tub. Simply reach over and turn the machine off when you want to take the mask off. I use the smart start option to start my machine, only and always turn it off manually.
