Hose covers on heated hoses?

Post by socknitster » Sat Nov 14, 2020 4:39 pm

I searched through old posts and didn't find much on this topic, so I thought I'd start a quick thread. Hope I'm not resurrecting some dead old argument...

Back in the day, before heated hoses, we used to make or buy hose covers for our hoses. Mine were made of fleece and I used them year round to prevent rainout.

(The things we used to do to prevent rainout--I also used to sleep with most of my hose under the covers with me.)

Now I find myself back on CPAP with a very nice heated hose (it's been almost a year already), but I miss the comfort of the cover. It quieted the sound of the house and was a little nicer to bump into in the middle of the night. I haven't experienced rainout with the new equipment except just once when I tried turning up the humidity a notch.

I asked my DME about it and she said she'd never heard of such a thing, then laughed and said, "Yeah, if you want to die in a fire." But she sounded like an uneducated git, so I'm not too worried about what she said.

I mean, I don't see how a cover could really hurt anything. This is super low voltage, and it can't be generating much heat at all. It's not like the cover will be in contact with the power source or anything. I can't think of any reason why it would actually be dangerous--can you?

What say ye, oh Collective Hivemind of All Things CPAP?

You can use a hose cover on a ResMed or Respironics integrated heated hose. All it does it help you retain the warmth the heating coils generate so you use less electricity to maintain whatever hose air temp you select or prefer.

Now a hose cover on one of the stand alone heated hoses that doesn't have a rheostat (like the Hybernite heated hose) and only has an on/off switch with no control of the air temp...not a good idea. It will get too hot.

Thank you, Pugsy!

I have a ResMed machine with its accompanying heated hose. I should be fine. I think I'll sew one up tomorrow.

The heated hose does not get hot. It can't , start a fire.

Just another voice saying "yeah, it's fine to put a hose cover on the Resmed heated hose"... the hose has a little thermistor in the end of it, so it's reading the temperature of the air, and only heats up just enough to get to whatever you set it to... putting insulation on the hose just means it doesn't have to heat up as much :)

Thank you for confirming what I was pretty sure I knew. Sometimes you just want another opinion as a sanity check. And I don't know anyone in real life that is on CPAP.

You might be surprised, you may know people in real life that are on CPAP, you just don't know that you know them :)

You know, that's true. It's not something I talk about much. I actually don't even think about it much except right before sleeping.

I have used the ResMed hose cover ( zips on ) on my Climateline heated hose for a couple years. No problems at all.

Not for the reason most would think, but in fact to cut down noise. The rough climateline hose would make noise sliding across the sleeping area. The hose cover makes it almost silent when the hose moves, especially against something hard.

I use a climate line hose with a hose cover that I bought from a forum member on here years back. I love it. It is so soft and the hose makes no noise when moving because of it too. I don't know if the member is even making the hose covers any more. So if you want a hose cover get a hose cover!

Was that the guy who was knitting them?
I think he knitted them in the round, like socks. That would be pretty.
Pad a cheek makes nice fleece covers; or one could spiral wrap a fleece strip,
with rubber bands holding the ends.

Yes he was the one knitting them! I looked him up and it looks like he hasn't been logged on since March of this year. So hopefully he is still doing well. I purchased 2 over the years from him and have loved them both. It made comfort with the hose so much better.

I have a hose cover from Pad A Cheek that’s really nice. It fit my Dreamstation hose perfect. I now have a Resmed machine and find that the cover isn’t long enough. I didn’t see one for that machine. What brand do you use for Resmed?

ResMed makes a hose cover that is long enough for their heated hose but it is very thin material and not nearly as plush as the Padacheek hose cover.

You probably have about 6 inches not covered by the Padacheek hose cozy. I don't know of any place with a 6 inch hose cozy of the quality of Padacheek. Now she does make a 12 inch short hose cozy which could probably be added and scrunch things together.
Or maybe if you are handy you could make your own.
I don't know if she has a hose cozy for the heated hose from ResMed but you might look...it might be a little longer than the one you have.

My wife and I both use hose covers from padacheek, and are very happy with them. We simply leave the first part of the hose where it connects to the machine uncovered. We have never had any rain out problems. We prefer to have the part of the hose next to our face covered.
