Off CPAP for life! LCHF now
Off CPAP for life! LCHF now
Hi, I used to live on these forums when I first was diagnosed with Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I learned so much and ended up being one of those that did the full "Silence of the Lambs" look. I used the chinstrap (Ruby Puresom brand) and special 3M surgical paper-thin tape to seal my lips so I wouldn't get the lip-puffs. And used a nasal mask. Was on the CPAP since 2016. In 2018 November I began intermittent fasting - lost ~12 lbs in a year. I then saw my brothers going full Keto/Intermittent fasting and followed suit.
I'm 5'8 and was 196lbs. After going Keto in 2019 I have plateaued at 165 which is where I am now. I was very hesitant about getting off CPAP because it really did save my life/sanity at the time. I began slowly taking the CPAP off after nature's first wakeup call every night. So I was originally wearing it all night, then went to ~ 50/50 and was feeling great every morning. I recently used the snore lab app just to see if I was snoring after removing the CPAP - for over a week, barely a score over 2 - the norm for snorers is 25.
My long laborious point is - while many thin people have OSA and will likely be life-long affected, the chronic diet related diseases (Heart, Lung, Alzheimer's, Diabetes, kidney)from our SAD (Standard American Diet) are keeping our Dr.'s churning out and endless treadmill of drugs and no decent nutrition advice. I have steeped myself in all things high fat low carb related and am a complete convert. My keto isn't a diet. It's the way I'll eat for the rest of my life with possible carb-cycling to introduce. I'm convinced that for me, this 30 pounds of weight loss cause my throat architecture to diminish thus essentially curing my apnea.
If anyone thinks they can't do keto, please reconsider and educate yourself by immersing into Nina Teicholz's "The Big Fat Surprise", check out Brian Sander's podcast "Peak Human". You'll learn that as wrong as people once thought the sun revolved around the earth…that our recent 120 year change in eating processed foods and vegetable oils is as wrong and causing nearly all our chronic ailments. I'm not doing this long TLDNR rant as a humble brag, I am genuinely trying to show that this way of eating not only has proven to CURE type II diabetes, but is a delicious way to go through the rest of your life by eating meat/fish/butter some leafy greens and minimal fruit (low carb)…and you'll be absolutely amazed at how you feel.
I'm now very fat-adapted and do the OMAD method. One meal a day. Have non-stop level energy, and brain is functioning better than ever. This way of eating is still evolving and continues to learn so much data that I have even stopped my statins for cholesterol.
Please give if a look if you are seriously wanting to not only become healthier, but get off the CPAP horse.

Looking forward to seeing you post the results of your sleep study showing your AHI is below the 5 threshold.
You have taken another sleep study, and aren't just drawing the conclusion you don't need CPAP because your snoring less?????

So you made a "woman skin suit".

Does it still fit after losing so much weight?

For diabetics, the line is very thin between keto and dead.
Not everybody can use this plan, but for those who can--good luck.

Yeah, put me on the list of those waiting to see you post the results of your in-lab sleep study.
And, like CF said, that diet can be deadly for diabetics.
Losing weight can be great, but it doesn't "cure" everything.
Besides, none of us are getting out of this place alive, anyway.

Re: Off CPAP for life! LCHF now
Well, I'm coming on these forums to get help and/or see people's experience with CPAP. Now, I am ok with you sharing what you believe is your success but, less ok with you trying to convince people who's life maybe at risk with Apnea to adopt a way of life that a test pool of 1 persone says is effective, without being able to confirm it does work from a clinical standpoint and, whether the Keto/fasting is the definitive reason it did work. On top of it, to promote doing so without proper supervision it seems...
But, hey, I'm not the boss of this forum.

john goodman, who IS boss of this forum, is a big believer in free speech. the longer you hang out here, the more you'll see just how much he believes in free speech.
btw...i'm right there with you. the name of this joint is CPAPTALK and that's pretty much what one could reasonably expect to see here.

Re: Off CPAP for life! LCHF now
I did do another study and went from severe to mild about 6 months ago and I'm using commons sense and monitor how clear-headed I feel each morning. Though I do take your comments to heart and may recheck again just for that over-used term "closure." For the ones who think LCHF/Paleo/Keto is a one-off situation. Please dip your toe into the huge pool that is the Keto world:
Youtube - Dr. Boz (Annette Bosworth MD), Adapt Your Life - Dr. Westman, Dr. Eric Berg DC and perhaps my favorite Ken Berry MD. I'm just sharing what worked for me after 30 years of trying to lose that 30#. Juice, South Beach, counting calories, sheer will power and exercise.

I hear you, thanks for the heads-up. I'm quite on board with free speech and normally try really hard to make sure that I don't come out as a know-it-all who has all the valid answers. I added that "boss" thing to express that, although not in agreement, I was fully aware that, at the end of the day, whether I am right or not is of no consequence and if I can't accept what pass as acceptable for the forum, I'm the one who should take a hike.

Well, you know, part of the 'free speech' thing here is that people like the OP who come in spouting dubious crap will tend to have lots of people refute their dubious crapTheClerk wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 6:16 pmI hear you, thanks for the heads-up. okay. i wanted to make sure of that. we've had lots of folks over my few years here come in and tell us they were "cured". but i only remember one user who actually did another sleep test to confirm.

So, instead of having an apnea every minute, you have one every few minutes.
Best of luck to you.
