Machine is new to me after two hours of sleep wake up heart racing gasping for air

Post by Bpears » Wed Sep 23, 2020 6:03 pm

Machine is new to me after two hours of sleep wake up heart racing gasping for air . I have an automatic machine that’s it to give me different pressures I have a full face mask. And I’ve been only able to do it three times so far sleep once for an hour and a half once for two hours and another time for one hour with the machine on during the hour and a half and two hours I woke up both times with my heart racing and not being able to breathe what is going on. I also have problems when I’m going to sleep as soon as they put on the mask my heart starts to race I do have a problem with my heart with that but I’ve been dealing with that there’s an extra heartbeat in my heart feels like it’s fluttering you’re missing a beat when I go to sleep at night but it gets worse when I put on the machine.

Sounds a little like anxiety.

I am new to CPAP too and have an automatic machine. I felt like that too and the DME person set my machine with a lower pressure of air that I have to breathe against. She also told me to wear it when not trying to fall asleep to try to adjust to it which helped. I also felt like the nasal cushion made me feel like I was suffocating so maybe a different mask. Hopefully it gets better for you. I do believe there is a curve of getting used to it.

Well it happens two hours or an hour and a half after I’m asleep so I don’t know how much anxiety I’m having while I’m asleep. I also can’t lower the machine or raise the machine because it’s automatic I already talk to the doctor about that. Before this happened

The doctor is on a power trip.
Most of us use the clinical manual to find comfortable settings.
It sounds like the low pressure is too low for comfort.
Many feel starved for air at the lowest setting.
If the doctor has a problem with that, find a different doctor.

Bpears, could you fill out your profile with information about your machine and your mask? And could you tell us the pressure range you're using?

With that information, we might be able to make some suggestions.

You may not really be asleep, even if you don't recall. And have you ever awakened from a nightmare all sweaty and anxious? Sleep is not a guaranteed protection from anxiety.

It may just be that your starting pressure is too low. Lots of people find this to be true. Miss Emerita is right; it would help the experts (I'm not one of them) if you would provide the exact full name of your pap machine, the name of the mask you use and the pressure settings presently on your machine. Then people can give you sound advice. Without the info everyone will just be guessing.
