OT: Oh, Zonker....

Zonker, what happened to the happy popcorn guy? Was he bummed by crises that are global? national? personal?

well, it's like this. for the longest time, back before you even came to the forum, i didn't use an avatar at all. i think i was just trying to hunker down and be invisible. i know, i know. YOU know me as the big mouth i present to the forum currently. but i wasn't always that way.

as i gained confidence here, i started thinking of an avatar. of course, i would've wanted my hero, zonker p. harris, to represent me. so i started seeking out images of zonker. at the same time, i mentioned my search here. well, the ONLY images i could find for zonker emphasized his connection with marijuana. and sure that's a big part of zonker. he was a stoner and his humor was partially stoner humor.

but i felt more attracted to zonker because of his sideways sense of humor, stoner or not. i didn't like the images i was finding. so chicago granny came up with the popcorn munching character, who is part of the brand name of a snack, screaming yellow zonkers. and it fit, because i had started using (or overusing) the giraffe munching popcorn gif. so i sighed and took it.

but the image i REALLY wanted was the one i have now. it's from my favorite doonesbury comic strip. this was way back in the day, when zonker and the other characters were college students. the scene opens with zonker staring out the dorm window. next panel is another character telling zonker that he just spaced out on a makeup exam and now zonker will fail for sure! next panel is zonker again staring out the window. last panel is zonker saying "bummer".

this cracked up my young self. i can't explain why. anyway, THAT is what i wanted. and a forum member found the strip online!! she didn't hang around here long but boy, did she ever do me a solid. can't even remember her name or i'd thank her profusely.

once i had the strip, i still needed help. palerider came to me rescue and trimmed it down to the last panel. but i was in a bit of a quandary. CG had been kind enough to find me the old avatar. so i stuck with it.

i dunno why, maybe it was jnk and his ever changing avatar, but i felt like changing it. unfortunately, i couldn't find the one palerider had done for me, so i used my own feeble gifts and produced what we see now.

so, to answer your question, it's not a political statement from me or about me. although i can see how it would present that way out of context.

but that's enough about them.

Zonker, my memory is in its usual shambles, but what you wrote caused a few synapses to fire and now I wonder ... was the person who found the strip me?

I'm glad I could help, Mr. Z. I'm also glad to have looked at that thread again, because I see I got a permanent exemption from the death to all scum that pr was threatening. I had forgotten that, so now I'm resting easier again.

Forgot that, and so much else. Seriously, my memory just gets worse. CPAP fixed various things, but not that. I left my iPad at the allergy clinic on Friday. Happily, they found it and I have it back again, but geez. I think the Great Sequester isn't helping, since the days are harder to tell apart.

yup. you best save that post. palerider doesn't seem to get in here too often anymore. HE might have forgotten that he said that!

"the Great Sequester"..i like that.

the only way i keep the days apart is that wednesday is "go look at the property day" and the rest are certain podcasts on certain days.

Zonker: your new avatar threw me off for a minute too. I've kept mine for a long time. I remember Pugs used to have an avatar with deers on it, but she has kept the one she has now for a long time too. There's usually an interesting story behind our avatars.....

Hey! I thought we had all agreed to find a way a way to blame PR for everything we do in this forum, not me. In fact, I think that's in the sign-up agreement now.
