Insurance companies

Post by milboltnut » Sun Apr 26, 2020 11:16 am

I won't elaborate too much about these people......

But they aren't too smart, and I was naive to let them do it.

I went for my sleep study and was recommended to take another study with a CPAP, to see the difference...

Would the second sleep study with the CPAP reveal if another PAP ie; APAP or other machine was nessesary?

Instead the Ins. Co. wouldn't authorize the second study and allowed me to have the CPAP machine instead.

That second study was probably unnecessary. It's good that you have a machine now.

One source of confusion, here and in your other thread, is that "CPAP" is often used as a very general term covering fixed-pressure-only machines, adujstable pressure machines, bi-level machines, and more specialized machines.

In general, it is good to keep everything in one thread at first, so that we can all see the various questions that are on your mind.

The second study with a CPA is to determine the pressure that works the best. However, by using an Autoset machine you will usually be able to zero in on a pressure that works for you on your own.

When sleep studies first began, it was standard procedure to test in two nights. The first night was without a machine to determine the number of apneas on a given night's sleep. The second night was to try CPAP at various increasing pressures until the apneas were resolved. This is called titration. Then, in order to streamline the process, some sleep labs started offering a split-night study. The first half of the night would be without a CPAP to test for apnea or other conditions, the second half of the night was titration. Then, as things got even more streamlined, some labs started doing home tests and home apnea titration. Now it appears for some insurance companies, it's enough to know that you are diagnosed apneac, so they just toss a machine and a mask at you from the DME's warehouse and tell you to fly, expecting that you're already fledged.

It's great that you found cpaptalk.

Hey Dreamdriver...... thanks for your input.

I just don't want to have to wait another 3 months, to be told, again, well, we have to wait and see, the machine is quite there yet.

Yesterday I jacked up the start pressure from 5 to 7 and the AHI dropped to 13 to 8.

Since march 13th.... It's been a rollar coster ride in regards to the AHI and central apneas. I believe that the second study would have been beneficial.

This discussion points out the pros and cons of the streamlined version of sleep labs. On the one hand, more people are "processed", which gets the machines in to the hands of the people who need it. On the other hand, the sleep labs that are done may not necessarily be done thoroughly enough to determine whether there are complications that merit further study for specific patients. They know most people are going to fail, so they don't even try to help them. It's like giving a diabetic the proper tools, but not educating them as to the dose or even what form of diabetes they have. Our medical system is failing us.

If you post some OSCAR data right in this thread, maybe others will help you figure them out too.

Download OSCAR from the link in my signature.

Are you using Norton, or another antivirus program? It's possible you may need to tell Norton that it's okay to install OSCAR. Similarly, you'll need to tell Windows to allow the install. Check out this post by Mike2020 in the thread about OSCAR 1.1.0.

Here are directions for installing OSCAR on Windows 10.

More general installation information is available here.

Once the program is installed, you should be able to upload the content of your SD card into OSCAR.
