Large leaks have appeared - CBD to blame?

Post by tisket » Sun Mar 08, 2020 7:47 am

I have been getting large leaks lately (and waking up feeling like crap). Really wondering what is going on. So far I have replaced the heated tubing (found a small leak in it where the hose connects to the ring that connects to the machine), replaced the mask (went from Aloha to Airfit P30i), and started taping my mouth again. None of these steps helped, still 8% large leak rate. Could the machine be going bad? Or am I sleeping so deeply that the nasal pillows are breaking seal and I don't fix it like I used to? I think in the past I often would wake somewhat to fix a leak but rarely remember it in the morning.

Went years without large leaks. Only thing I can think of is that lately I have been taking CBD oil for inflammation in my wrists, maybe it is making me sleep so deeply that I sleep right through a break in the nasal pillow seal.

P30i is making my nose incredibly sore in the morning, maybe just because I'm not used to it. If I wear it any looser though the seal tends to break easily. Side sleeper or at least that's the position I go to sleep in.

Lansinoh might make the seal better without cranking it down as hard.
Tight masks may leak worse, because of creases caused by tightness.
Pain interferes with sleep.
If you are sleeping better with less pain, I would prefer that any night.

Agreed with Chunky about trying Lansinoh. I just started using it and it appears to have helped stop leaks I've been experiencing recently dead in their tracks. I wasn't even looking for that to happen... I just wanted to try it to help with a blister from my nasal pillow.

I was using Lansinoh every night with my Aloha - and getting 8% large leaks. Keep in mind I had no large leaks with the Aloha for years. I used to, until I started taping my mouth. Then it seems after awhile I was able to stop taping it and the leaks didn't return, thought my tongue was trained.

I haven't tried Lansinoh yet with the new mask, wanted to see how it fit compared to the Aloha.

If I make it any looser, it starts leaking even before I go to sleep, as soon as I move around at all on my pillow or try to settle in.

Well I tried Lansinoh with the new mask.

Sunday night 0%
Monday night 0%
Tuesday night 16% after loosening the mask a bit to stop nose soreness.
Wednesday night 0% after tightening mask again...and I woke up with the strip of bright blue tape missing. No sign of it anywhere in the dark grey sheets or anywhere around the bed. I hope I didn't eat it!

Check your ears/hair/upper back/butt crack.

Had 0% leak last night but I am exhausted. I think I got chipmunk cheeks all night long and kept waking up to put my tongue back in place. I noticed it kept falling out of place even while I was still awake and trying to go to sleep the first time. Never had this problem before, very strange.

Pressure was also higher than normal and AHI was over 4, usually it's more like 2.

Still getting large leaks on some nights even with mouth taped. Loose mask, tight mask, doesn't seem to matter. 9% leak last night.

I am starting to wonder if the machine itself can go bad and develop internal leaks in the humidifier or something.

Went years without leaks and now I am waking up tired with headaches and with a large leak % that is alarming.

Masks move and cause intermittent leaks.
If a machine has an internal problem the leak should be constant not intermittent.

See image below.....Mouth taped....so the only other source for leaks is mask movement. This was an experiment I did with a different kind of machine which is why I taped after seeing this sort of leaking for several nights. I don't normally tape but I taped this night so I could figure out where the source for leaks are. In this situation...P10 mask and the headgear was simply worn out and wouldn't shrink enough to give me good tension. New headgear fixed this problem for me.

I've switched masks (from Aloha to brand new Airfit P30i), and got a new heated tube (old one hissed if I lifted it a bit near where it connected to the machine). Still getting large leaks for 30 min or more in a row. Spent a lot of the night at 75+ total leak. When I wake up in the morning the nasal pillows are extremely snug, nose even hurts. (Wearing it more loosely didn't help either.) I can't blow any air past the mouth tape at all.

In the past I think these kinds of leaks would wake me up, but now they don't.

Loosened up the mask some, and only taped the center inch of my mouth this time. 0% leak though my mouth was dry as a bone.

At this point I have to think it's the nasal pillow seal, though why I am having so many problems with it lately, I don't know, unless the CBD oil makes me sleep too soundly to wake up when there's a leak and fix it.

Last three nights: 0%, 14%, 15% large leak. No changes in equipment/taping over those nights.

Not sure what to do at this point.

3% two nights ago with no CBD oil. 29% (!) last night with the oil.

I think it makes me sleep too soundly and I don’t fix leaks that used to wake me up before.

21% last night with no oil.

I am going to try replacing the water tank. The lid hasn’t locked securely for some time now. Wasn’t sure if that made any difference since the machine lid presses down on it anyway.
