Will there ever be a "portable" ASV machine?

Post by SimbaLion » Tue Nov 20, 2018 1:28 am

So I've read speculation that the hardware across the entire line of CPAP/Bi-PAP/ASV's are the same and the only difference is really just the software. Not sure if that's a gross simplification, but it seems fairly plausible.

However, it seems like there are no travel machines available yet in the BiPAP or ASV flavors (obviously, I'd expect them to be more expensive)...is it because the hardware is actually more complicated? Or maybe the market isn't big enough for those?

I would LOVE a travel machine.

Portability is often defined by the ability/willingness to pack, carry, or drag.
If I need something badly enough--there is a way to get it there.

I dont understand a lot of the hype about portability when it comes to PAP devices... I've traveled with mine many times and it seamed portable enough to me as is. Mind you I'm not running it off of a battery or strapping it to the top of my head... but if you really want to do that I guess they do have options.

As you said I'm not sure if the more capable machines have ultra portable options.

That's the way I think of it. Any modern PAP device made with in the last 5 to 8 years is plenty portable. You can't stick it in you briefcase or pocket but its certainly not that difficult to carry on airline trips and any other types of common travel.

The PAP devices advertised as portable or travel PAPs are to me more like a ultra portable. Fewer bells and whistles but very tiny form factor. I can't see my self needing such a tiny PAP unless I was trying to go backpacking with batteries and a solar charger. The tiny PAP devices just seam very specific and not something I need.

I like my PAP as is... and dont want to have to deal with getting used to two difrent types of PAP just for travel or convenience, it is more of an inconvenience to me to have to buy something else and learn and acustomize my self with another machine.

I think we may see ultra portable versions of the more equipped machines on the market but... most likely at a considerably later date. It's all about market share. There may just not be enough people buying the travel PAPs to invest in the equipment development or (jumping through FDA hoops...

Restwell,
Gryphon

I'm with you, would love a more compact ASV machine. Space and weight (not to mention distilled water) are very important to me when traveling.

Try dehydrated water.
Light and compact--just add, er, water.

So, don't use distilled water, it's not actually a requirement, not matter what you've been told.

I bring my regular DreamStation CPAP everywhere. I don't want to spend for a travel machine and risk finding it uncomfortable. The DreamStation ASV is no larger than the regular one, and I believe that the same applies to the ResMed ASV. Furthermore, an ASV machine is much more expensive than a regular Auto CPAP; the same would likely apply to any travel version that might be available.

Remember than it's not counted against your luggage allowance.
