So far only 4 hours

Post by Trying23 » Wed Jan 22, 2020 10:34 am

Hi, I am a newbie. Three weeks in, started January 1st. I am a 47 year old woman - sleep study found I had 48 apneas per hour. I have a Resmed Airsense 10 and an AirFit nasal cushion. I have a few questions I'd love help with.

1. How do you fall BACK asleep with this on and can I try something else if I can't? I have gotten used to falling asleep with this, at the beginning of the night, but after I get up to go to the bathroom (usually, like clockwork, at four hours, ha!), I can't seem to fall back to sleep with it. I lay there, awake, with machine on trying to sleep for 30-60 minutes and then have been giving up, feeling super aware of the gear and thinking, "well, 3 more hours of sleep with 48 breathing interruptions is better than no sleep at all." (?) I have a history of having trouble sleeping so this whole process has been a challenge for me (and, like many others, I avoided the sleep study for far too many years for this reason.) I just can't wait to get the thing off my face in the middle of the night and be...free! CPAP, when it's on, is getting me down to 1-4 apneas per hour, which tells me that it works, much as I dislike it. My understanding is that getting up to 6 hours gives you the most benefits, so I'm kind of stumped. I'm wondering: what if I use this for 4 hours and then try something else for the next 3 hours - do people supplement this therapy with another "therapy" or other things, such as that elevated pillow (?) or the dental/oral devices (?) for when they can't sleep, or they are stuffed up, or when they are traveling?

2. What is the best soap to use? And how often do you clean the tubing? I guess I fell into the beginner's trap and got the SoClean (my supplier recommended it, I dunno) but am reading here that it may have been a foolish fear purchase...and I'm bummed to accept that I wasted $300 but will stop using or use it like once a week or so it if it really isn't that effective, but just want to make sure I'm doing what I should be doing to get it clean and not degrading the materials.

Thanks in advance for any advice - this is my first time posting on any forum. :D

Someone else can help more about the wake-ups/not going back to sleep, but as far as cleaning goes, most never bother with the hose at all (no real need), and use e.g. baby wipes or Dawn to clean the mask weekly. Don't use any ozone machines or 'cleaners' - worse than nothing and your machine just doesn't need sterilizing.

Hi, I am a newbie.
welcome to the zoo! yes, we can see by your name the number of posts. :)

since putting on my mask 4.5 years ago, i've only slept without it once. that was an experiment that i will NOT repeat! horrible night.

cpap is therapy and there really isn't an alternative. i use it when i have a cold. i use it in the rare circumstance that i take a nap. it's just there and a part of the sleep apnea life. there really isn't an alternative.

i may suggest that you where the mask at other times outside of bed and sleep? it may not have too much of an impact on you. that's usually for folks who can't get used to it at all. but you might try it.

what are your minimum and maximum pressure? it may not be set correctly for you. many sleep docs prescribe a stupid setting starting with a min of 4. this can make it very hard to sleep with.

as to the so clean-can you return it for your money back? as julie mentions, it's not needed. and you can certainly find some other something to spend that money on, right?

i've cleaned my tube once. that was before i came hear and learned it's not necessary. i wipe my mask every morning with unscented baby wipes. i wash it whenever i happen to think about it. in fact, it's prolly time to do that now!

good luck.

Hi, thank you :) I think in my sleep study they determined that I should have a pressure of 8, I don't know about max and min, I guess I would have to call and ask. My machine starts at 5 and ramps up to 8. It doesn't feel like it's a pressure issue but more just having the gear on.

Yes, I may look into returning the soclean.

Thanks again

Four hours per night is enough to keep your insurance company (or employer) happy, but to get the best results, you need to use it the whole time you sleep.

Do you remove the mask when you go to the bathroom? This is a major disruption. I just disconnect the hose from the mask, do my business, and reconnect the hose. If I had to put on the mask all over again, I would have the same kind of issues.

Thank you D.H. I have tried leaving it on and also taking it off. I will try to commit to keeping it on and see if that helps.

You should immediately start the process to return the soclean, because using it will void the warranty from Resmed for your machine.

The answer of "Getting back to sleep" is a tough one to answer I feel because it's mostly based in *OPINION* and being a very subjective / personal concept. From a technical standpoint, I can only offer one item, Practice. You've got to teach your brain that the mask is not to be loathed or even tolerated but accepted. Your mask is your friend that really wants to help you get good restful sleep. Try wearing when watching tv or reading to just become accustomed to it at times that you're not fighting to get to sleep.

Now from my personal point of view, there are other items of note: Your mask is nasal, from the beginning I have been on full face..but got interested in nasal recently and I tried it. I didn't last two nights, on the 2nd night I like woke in a panic to the rush of air blowing up my nose and immediately said hell no, forget this, I want the nice, calm, relaxing air pressure delivery that I receive from my full face mask. I know you've been on nasal for several weeks now, but maybe that's just not your cup of tea. That may be making it tough for you to relax to get back to sleep. The pressure delivery experience between the two I feel are very different.

Also you might want to try a type of mental exercise, form a simple scenario to run through your mind to give your brain something to focus on and shift attention from the mask, sort of like a tool for meditation, if you will. Call it a jumped up "Counting Sheep".

As for washing everything..ehh...I rarely wash the hose, frame or water basin, maybe a couple times a year, if that. Mask cushion gets it every night with hot water and Dawn. Anyway, my official answer is --Practice--
Yay :D For no more diaphragm cramps and dozing off while driving!

When you turn on your machine, the set pressures appear on the screen.

The only way to learn to fall back to sleep is to keep trying. When you get up after four hours, do you remove the mask to go to the bathroom? If my wife or I get up to use the bathroom at night, we simply disconnect the hose from the mask and get up. When we return to the bed, we hook the hose back to the mask, start the machine again and go back to sleep. The nights I can not get back to sleep within 20 minutes, I will get up, go into the living room and listen to music until I am ready to go back to sleep.

As far as cleaning, we all clean to the level we are comfortable with. Some people clean everything every day, and others never clean. My routine is to wash the masks, cushions, mask pads and water tanks every Monday morning with Ivory liquid dish soap. Just use what ever dish soap you normally use to clean your dishes. Just rinse well after washing. I only wash the hose if one of us has been sick and has recovered. Others here on the forum simply wipe the mask down daily with a generic baby wipe. You can buy CPAP wipes, but they are more expensive.

Lots of great advice here, so I won’t repeat it. But I did want to say welcome. I think this was the first forum I ever posted to as well!
