Something to consider: What if your machine should fail prematurely and the manufacturer decides they won't fix it because you did not use the filter as you were instructed to do. I doubt if they would refuse to fix the machine, but they may say you caused the failure due to not using the filter. I figure a dollar every two or three months is cheap insurance to keep a $1700 dollar machine working.

According to his profile, he's got an AirStart 10.Okie bipap wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 11:59 amSomething to consider: What if your machine should fail prematurely....
Maybe he's not not using a filter because his machine failing prematurely would be a good thing.

Filters are dirt cheap - https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R ... s&_sacat=0
Did you really get stuck with the AirStart model, or is that just a mistake in your Forum Equipment Profile?

Still a good thread for newbies to read.

The filters for my machine are pretty darn cheap, imo. $5 for more than a one-year supply (I realize different machines may have different filters & costs). I have lots of dust and pets in my house, so I change mine out once a month.

The Pollen filter is optional (not required), the black foam filter is not, and can be cleaned with soap and war, as it protects the machine works.Okie bipap wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 11:59 amSomething to consider: What if your machine should fail prematurely and the manufacturer decides they won't fix it because you did not use the filter as you were instructed to do. However I think my Lungs are important also, more than my XPAP, much easier to buy. I have allergies 12 months a year, I breath better at night on XPAP and clean air.

Re: Air Filter! Why? Do I need it? If so wheres the proof?
This is an important topic for newbies and I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that most recent machines have two grades of filter. One is merely a dust filter, and then there is a much finer filter which may be the "pollen" filter that has been mentioned. I think I saw a specification on cpap.com that ResMed "fine" filters are 2.5 microns. Don't know if that is true, and the filter that came in my used machine was very porous. I think it is the "regular" grade.
I have used Respironics System One 560 for several years and I love the fine filters which I have seen described as 'hepa' filters. I'm not sure they are true hepa filters, but they do stop very fine dust. I recommend them. If you have insurance they cost about a buck apiece. I have seen filters on ebay (from China) which are very cheap and may be just as good.
You can also toss the Respironics fine filters in the laundry and they come out white and clean. So there is a money-saving tip.

Re: Air Filter! Why? Do I need it? If so wheres the proof?
I think you wanted to say, the fine filter is optional, and isn't required (which I'm not sure of the manufacture's requirements) cause dark gray washable foam is the pollen filter. That's if you're referring to PR system one 50 or 60 series, which I think you are, cause ResMed uses only one, either standard, or hypo filters.Goofproof wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 2:16 pmThe Pollen filter is optional (not required), the black foam filter is not, and can be cleaned with soap and war, as it protects the machine works.Okie bipap wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 11:59 amSomething to consider: What if your machine should fail prematurely and the manufacturer decides they won't fix it because you did not use the filter as you were instructed to do. Yes, a filter topic could add value.
This topic is NOT a good one to try to save. The OP cannot be taken serious and because of that any signal gets drowned out in noise.
If you think a good topic with accurate information is valuable, start one. But don't start it with a title suggesting they're not important and to prove you wrong.

Respironics machine have 2 filters available. One is optional.
ResMed machines only have 1 filter being used.
I am unsure of the other brands.
Ask Zoocrewphoto what happens when no filter is used. Her mom lost her filter to her ResMed machine and they didn't notice it for quite a while. Messed up the machine.

And by "recent", you mean "in the last decade".
They're not even *close* to HEPA filters.

Pugsy,
Oh my, I bet it did. I guess I'd better put some glue on the filter I built last night from two Respironics Fine filters cut up so as to fit the ResMed 10. Two of the pieces could easily be swallowed by the machine, but they wouldn't get into the fan --at least not all the way in!
