Battery backup causes Dreamstation power problem?

Post by See-Papa » Sun Jan 05, 2020 1:11 pm

Hi, first post here. I have a power problem with my equipment and would appreciate any help.

BTW: I have severe OSA (70 AHI) and have successful treatment, 100% compliance, and feel great (when everything works). Been on treatment for 18 months now.
I use a Phillips Dream-station with heated humidifier and heated hose, and use an Airfit F10 mask.
In short, I need my CPAP to work or I am in severe trouble.
I love my CPAP!

We have frequent power outages. I have a whole house backup generator but it has manual start.

SO, I got this batter backup for my Dreamstation: http://medistrom.com/products-pilot12plus.html

Everything good so far.

When I went on travel, I did not bring the battery. But at the hotel, when plugged in, the Dreamstation says: 'Check power'
Everything hooked up properly. My medical supplier said to tray another cable. No help.

This happened every time I traveled!!

So when I got home, I tried plugging in to the wall WITHOUT the battery backup and I get the same problem: 'Check power'.

But when I plug into the battery backup the machine works fine.

So now, I HAVE to take the battery with me and the CPAP machine will not work without it!!

That is my current solution and it works.

So my question is, should I get this fixed? I feel like something is wrong and is precarious.

Anybody else have this issue?

Check you have not snapped off the centre pin on the power supply ? It sounds like the Dreamstation is not detecting the resistance of the centre pin to identify the power supply

Here are some photos of the power connection at the machine from the battery.

This is the configuration that works!

And here is the connection from the power brick that has failed me.

BUT I just tried it and it DOES work today. But this is the same connection that failed me at the hotels and last time I tried at home too.

So this is my problem that this power brick connection is unreliable, while the battery connection never fails.

So you tried a second power cord and got the same error? Sounds to me like an issue with the machine itself then. If the second power cord is not intended for the machine, i would say its the power cords.

The machine came with a power supply that has two parts: Power brick that connects to the machine, AC cord that goes from the wall to the power brick.

When the brick has failed me on travel, I have tried swapping out the AC cord that goes from the wall to the brick (these cables are available at Best Buy), but that has no effect on the problem. I would still get the error: 'Check power'.

Meanwhile, the battery backup system has all its own cables. None of the original power brick cables are used. The backup has three parts: there is a cable that goes from the wall to the battery, then there is the battery itself, then a cable that goes from the battery to the machine. I have never had a failure with the battery connected.

But, when I have taken the machine on travel, and I try to use the power brick, it says 'Check power'. Then when I get home and try the power brick at home it still says, 'Check power'. But when I switch back to the battery it is fine.

However, I just tried the brick today, and it worked.

So, sometimes the brick works, sometimes not. Battery always works.

If this an issue with the machine, I will need to have my medical supplier fix it. But I am hoping you guys can help me decide what to do here before I make them give me a new unit, if that is the right path to take.

This is a frustrating problem since it seems like some kind of power check in the unit is not working right?

How do I prove to the medical supplier that my unit has a problem?

Should I make them give me another power brick to try?

The problem is that the way I have to test this seems to be to go on travel, and see if my CPAP fails. That usually means that it fails me the night before an important all-day meeting. Ugghhhh!!

I need to know that it will work. I hope you guys understand.

"power check" probably means that the center pin in the various cables. The picture you posted looks like it was too short so it might not be fully making contact.

Check the length of the center pin in the connectors of the various cables.
