Do you have a routine before sleeping with cpap or just put on and zzz?

Post by kdt15 » Thu Jan 02, 2020 9:25 pm

Ive just been putting it on and trying to sleep. i usually just wait until im really tired so its not too long.

i was curious if theres other routines that may help getting used to it or improving your sleep, such as putting on the mask and lying in bed watching tv or reading a book just to get comfortable before turning on the cpap? etc.

thanks!

I mask up *before* reading. that way I can just go to sleep, instead of having to wake up to get the mask on and going, or risk falling asleep without it.

Yeah, i have a routine, it goes: wash mask, shave, mask up, connect the tube and hit the button, jump in bed, the end.
Yay :D For no more diaphragm cramps and dozing off while driving! :lol:

I don't have a routine. Just mask up and go right to sleep. Funny thing is, this also works for my dog. I mask up and he goes right to sleep, lol.

What works well for one person may not work well for another. That said, here are the guidelines for better sleep:

• Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends or during vacations.
• Set a bedtime that is early enough for you to get at least 7 hours of sleep.
• Don’t go to bed unless you are sleepy.
• If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed.
• Establish a relaxing bedtime routine.
• Use your bed only for sleep and sex.
• Make your bedroom quiet and relaxing. Keep the room at a comfortable, cool temperature.
• Limit exposure to bright light in the evenings.
• Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
• Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime. If you are hungry at night, eat a light, healthy snack.
• Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.
• Avoid consuming caffeine in the late afternoon or evening.
• Avoid consuming alcohol before bedtime.
• Reduce your fluid intake before bedtime.

My check list:
* Put on night clothes
* Put away hearing aid
* Start charging phone and tablet
* Fill water bottle
* Fill humidifier tank,
* Take evening pills
* Inject insulin
* Apply eye drops
* Shut off light
After remembering all of the above, I am more than ready for sleep.

Oh, gosh, no. I don't want to wear the mask any more than is needed.

I get straight in bed and turn the lights off. My CPAP autostarts. I listen to a podcast through one ear pod. The phone timer is set to turn the podcast off in 15 minutes. Almost always, I am asleep before the podcast turns off.

That's an excellent set of habits.

My goal when I first started CPAP was to be able just to simply put on the mask and go to sleep. It took me MANY MONTHS to achieve that goal, but I did. So now, that's what I do. Put it on, go to sleep.
